Does anyone else had trouble activating eax?
When I installed the game and ticked the EAX in Options it wouldn't stay on.
So I read the ARX FAQ and they say to install the EAX unified driver, which is in a directory on your Arx Fatalis CD.
The GOG version has no CD so I searched the Web and managed to find.
After intall it I ticked the EAX again in the Options and now it's working properly.
My question is does anyone else had to take this additional steps to have EAX running properly or it was a problem with my install of ARX FATALIS?
Thanks and Cheers all.

I had that same problem in Arx Fatalis. I would click the box to use EAX and the next time I went in the menu the box would be unchecked. I don't think it is a problem with your install. i think it has something to do with the fact the game being older than the hardware you have. As long as your sound plays alright you should be fine.
Do you happen to have the link for the driver you found? I'm having the same problem (I didn't even realise until I saw this and checked it).
As for what is causing this, I guess the latest drivers aren't fully backwards-compatible with older EAX versions (meaning Arx thinks your card isn't EAX-compatible and doesn't save the setting); since the older drivers were included on the disc anyway this wasn't a problem before digital distribution.

And my question would be: How would I really know if this driver was working? What I mean to say is, how does the game actually sound different? Because right now I have the same problem (box keeps coming 'unticked'), but the game sounds just fine to me - actually, very good. Thanks.

I found it here http://archive.doomsdayhq.com/files.php scroll down a little and you'll find it.
You will notice the difference in many effects. The first and easiest to spot is the footsteps.
Just tick and untick and you'll see the difference.
So this didn't happen just to me.
Maybe GoG could provide a link or include in it the Arx download section for when and if people need it.
Cheers.

Wow, thanks for that! Unfortunately it doesn't work for me (presumably because I'm running 64-bit, although it probably doesn't like Vista/7 either). It would be great if GOG could offer a compatible version.

Sorry to hear that.
Guess I should've said I'm running XP 32 with SP3.
I agree. They could look into it but I guess more people need to come forward if they experience this same problem . That's why I asked here it this was an issue with my PC or not.
Regarding the issue itself with Arx, I don't believe it's related with the new hardware at all. I found a post in Jowood forum dated from 23-01-2003 here-->http://forum.jowood.com/showthread.php?t=90686 regarding this. Read Question 11.
This is why they included in the CD Version the said EAX unified driver for install.
My guess is that there wasn't a lot of sound cards capable of playing EAX back then.
Cheers.

If you're running Vista 64 bit, I have a question... Did you d/l your game from GOG (1.19 patch), and if you did are you having any problems with the bug that lets torches 'glow thru' walls? Reason I ask is I am running the original Arx (from the disk I bought ~6 years ago (1.18 patch)) with no problems, but that is on *my* XP computer. My wife just got a new Vista 64 bit computer for herself and I installed Arx on it (again - patch 1.18, it works!) because she is interested from watching me play. The problem is she is getting the 'torch glow thru walls' issue. I don't get the 'glow thru' problem, she does. If I knew for sure that Arx was running fine on Vista 64, then I'd get it here for her... Or is there an earlier patch that doesn't have that problem? Thanks.

Version 1.19 (currently only available on GOG) fixes torch occlusion among other things (see the changelog for details). I'm running Windows 7, which isn't quite the same as Vista, but from what I've seen the torch fix definitely worked.

Thanks... I'm a little hesitant to get the 1.19 fix for a couple of reasons. First, on my XP I have *NO* problems whatsoever with patch 1.18. The game looks and plays great and has no 'torch corona' problem either. The 1.18 patch on my wife's new computer (as I mentioned - Vista 64) also has no problems (at least in the first 10 or so minutes) except for the torch corona. And I've read about quite a few different problems that people are having here with 1.19... So, I'm afraid I'll trade one problem for many others. I don't know, but I wish I could find a way to just fix that one problem w/o introducing other headaches. Is it possible to get my wife's new rig (quite powerful - at least compared to my old XP) fixed up with a 'dual boot' config so she could choose XP or Vista 64 on boot up. (I know about 'compatibility mode' but I'm sure it's not the same thing)? Actually, I'm using compat. mode to run Arx on her machine now...
Thanks again for the advice. I know you said you're using Windows 7, but it seems like you're experienced with Vista too, and I'm quite new to the 'Vista world' myself (still kind of figuring it out, and as long as I've got Arx to play I don't need a new computer) ;).

I believe the corona bug is entirely a video card/drivers issue, and nothing to do with the operating system, so dual-booting will almost certainly be of no benefit in this instance.
The corona bug is an NVIDIA card problem. I am using Vista 64 and and ATI 4870 with no graphical anomolies. I am getting frequent fatal errors though which sucks...

I have an nVidia 7800GS card running on Windows XP. Original disc patched to Version 1.18. Absolutely *zero* problems whatsoever. Just finished the game for the 2nd time (7 years later). FWIW...
Perhaps its an issue with newer NVIDA cards and whatever they did to "fix" the issue in 1.19,
I posted this in another thread but I figured I'd put it here as well.

Holy crap I fixed the EAX problem!

I used RightMark 3DSound to test to see if EAX was working at all and it was working great (using ALchemy).

So I knew that it had to be related to the game. I looked around online and read about this game (and some others) requiring an EAX "unified" driver. I found the eax.dll at dll-files.com:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?eax

I put it into my windows\syswow64 folder, tried the game and nothing had changed.

I figured I should try registering the dll (most dlls need to be registered before windows will use them). So I ran regsrv32 at the command prompt and registered it.

EAX works perfectly in Arx now using ALchemy! :)

The driver must have been corrupted or unregistered by windows when the game crashed.

For anyone else having this problem, just follow the link above, download that zip file and extract the eax.dll to c:\windows\system32 (for most operating systems) or c:\windows\syswow64 for Vista x64 (and possibly XP x64).

Go open the command prompt (or the Run command in the start menu) and type the following:

regsvr32 c:\windows\syswow64\eax.dll

Obviously, change the path if you aren't on a 64-bit OS.

As long as you're using an X-Fi or Audigy 2 with ALchemy in Vista\Windows7 or using any kind of Soundblaster Live, Audigy or X-Fi in XP, it should work fine. :)

***********************

Remember, if you're using Vista, you need a card compatible with Creative ALchemy to get hardware sound and EAX. I think this is limited to the X-FI and maybe the Audigy 2. Get ALchemy here:
http://connect.creativelabs.com/alchemy/default.aspx

Realtek also released a beta of a similar program for their sound chips but its rather old is most likely really buggy. Still, its worth a try to get EAX effects in Vista if you have Realtek onboard sound. Its called Realtek 3d SoundBack:
