Does the game run fine in Windows 7 64 bits for most people? I have a dual core system with an ATI 5670 video card and onboard sound. I notice GoG doesn't officially state/support this as being Win7 compatible so I figured I would ask here.

I did read the thread below about issues trying to run it with Win7 but didn't really see a lot of responses saying it works fine, etc.

Any feedback would be appreciated as I'd like to play this one. Thanks.

You shouldn't have any problems with that system. Some Nvidia users have had performance issues but this doesn't seem to affect ATI/AMD users; I play on Windows 7 64-bit with an HD3850 and it works just fine. The game may occasionally crash but that's not specific to Windows 7.

Almost every GOG release works fine on Windows 7 even if the store page doesn't say so. In many cases GOG haven't even needed to change the installer and have simply updated the store page. GOG will be playing the compatibility game all over again with the upcoming Windows 8, but everything should be mostly fine on that too. :)

well it doesnt even start on my win7 machine.

Have you checked whether you have the latest DirectX updates? Windows 7 doesn't include all of these fixes by default.

Failing that have you tried one of the unofficial patches, Arx Fatalis Fixed or Arx Libertatis?

If the GOG staff had any good sense though. They would have made all their games Portable from the start. No wondering and worrying if they will work. They just would.

Plus they could obviously be placed on usb sticks and whatever other devices for added fun.

Pack all the necessary files into the game. Direct all the pages the game makes to the folder directory it is placed in, each time the launcher is started. Voila!

Game would play every time on many OS's without having to install and play with them every OS you try it on.

It's not quite that simple, unfortunately. DOSBox- and ScummVM-based GOGs could certainly be bundled in a truly portable manner but this simply isn't possible with Windows-based games since they rely on external features (video card drivers, DirectX DLLs, compatibility shims, etc.) that can't be bundled in a portable manner.

Most GOG customers evidently have no problems running their games (otherwise the forums would be flooded with issues), and a lot of those that are reported are resolved by support and/or other customers, so the way I see it GOG's current approach to compatibility is working quite well.

It is possible. I suspect the work is far more than they know how to do, compared to the over all gain. Either that or the legal nature of gathering all the needed files to operate the games.

But maybe the most obvious. They just haven't thought of doing it that way. Play the entire library across every OS (almost) from a portable flavor would be an epic improvement in the gaming industry.

It's running horribly for me (Core i7 with GT 330m, W7x64). During the actual game it will be smooth but then the frame rate drops to a slide show if I take out a weapon, and the menu screens are nearly impossible to navigate due to an FPS of maybe 1 at the most. When there is text on the screen it slows impossibly too. Looks like an awesome game but it's not working out for me. Yet another waste of money, few games I have got from here work for me.
