I've reinstalled it a few times and it still gives me this error. I'm on Win XP 32bit.

Try re-downloading.

The game doesn't install this file because it's part of Windows itself.

Open a Command Prompt window (Start >All Programs >Accessories > Command Prompt) and type the following command:

sfc /scannow

Hit Enter and Windows will scan for missing/broken files. This may take some time, but eventually it will find the missing file and ask for your Windows XP CD. Insert it and continue and it will install a replacement copy of the missing file. If you have an OEM system with multiple install CDs you want the one that says it has Windows on it.

If you don't have a Windows XP CD you can download the correct version of this file from this page, but try the above method first if you have the disc handy as it may find other problems at the same time.

Enjoy the game! I just ordered Might and Magic Dark Messiah Elements for the Xbox 360 which is the game Arkane Studios made after Arx Fatalis (which I loved). I'm excited to give Dark Messiah a shot :)

I seem to recall missing this file as well, although I wasn't missing it in my System32 folder. I actually had to put the .dll file in the root of the game directory for it to load.
