I have the same problem I believe. FPS drops substantially when there is text on the screen, the more text (such as the journal screen or large tutorial messages) cause framerate to plummet. It might have something to do with font scaling or smoothing, but I really don't know.
Running a Gateway P-7811FX
Windows Vista 64 (Vista basic theme)
ok, i think i found a solution. In the cfg_default.ini i've changed the line forcegdi=1 to 0, and now it seems to work a bit better. I'm going to continue playing and i'll tell you if i have some new problems =)
well, it doesn't seems to be so efficient...the game begin to lag when leave the goblins, i loose fps and have a mouselag... When i arrive to arx, the beginning problem comes again. I don'tknow where it could come form.

I can only offer the tips as before: see here. No idea how useful they'll turn out to be.
Do you have a multicore processor? Try to disable second core, maybe that helps.
It didn't for me, but your mileage may vary.
This seems to be an issue introduced in v1.18. I don't experience it in 1.17, but it happens in 1.18 and in the new GOG version 1.19.
forcegdi and processor affinity have no effect, and I've reset all the settings in the nvidia control panel for the game, to no avail.
I'm running WinXP, Core 2 Duo, and GF8600.
So this is odd, but I finally reinstalled the GOG version after playing with the older versions for a while, and I no longer have the problem!
So try reinstalling, is all I can suggest.
I do see a very momentary speed-up as an item is highlighted when I approach it, but the original problem was far worse, and it has not reared its head since I reinstalled v1.19.

yea, this issue is pretty strange... when i first installed my guy was running at about 100 mph while everything else was normal speed. This stayed like this for a few days. Yesterday, for no good reason, my save game took about 10 minutes to load (not normal) but afterwards I was walking at normal speeds. Go figure... now its working normally every time I play.
