I bought this game like two years ago, and really liked it and played it for a long time. I installed the game again yesterday, but I experience some kind of stuttering, especially when I drive fast. It's like the game can't catch up with displaying the assets that blend in the more you progress in the level. Seems to be an engine problem, because it doesn't matter how much I tone down the graphics. I didn't experience this earlier. Anyone has the problem too?

Nvidia RTX 2060

That's usually caused by a misconfiguration of vsync or variable refresh rate.

What are the refresh rate and resolution of your monitor? And what operating system are you using?

I have a 60hz monitor and the fps cap is set to 60, V-Sync. I tried turning V-Sync on/off, with all the other options too. Also tried setting the graphics to the absolute low. Doesn't help. The strange thing is, it doesn't happen right away, but with the second race or so in game and gets worse by the minute. Especially when doing turns, but also by driving straight roads. Im using Win10 64bit.

are the results the same with vsync on and the in game frame cap turned off?

I just tried it, it worked for four races. I try again tomorrow, but this may do the trick.

Nope, forget what I said, three races in, and starts stuttering again. So, sorry, but that didn't help.

What is your framerate when the stutter begins?

I don't know. Is there an option for that? I had the framerate cut to 60 (native), 72, 120, infinite, all with V-Sync on and off.
You could try the GOG Galaxy frame counter. Overlay has to be enabled in the GOG Galaxy Settings (in Game features) for that to work. You must launch aor through GOG Galaxy and when in-game press Ctrl+Shift+Tab.

Okay, did it. Constantly at about 60 fps. It slit slightly to 54 when the stutter began, but this was only once. This time it took six races to get to this.
Did you have stutter when the framerate was 60?

Yes.

Cool! If the framerate doesn't drop below 60 I have a few possible fixes in mind.

1. You could use vsync. For that, keep vsync on in game and remove the fps cap (that doesn't work for vsync). Then check in Nvidia control panel what settings you have. You could create a separate profile for aor if you don't want to mess up your general settings. I suggest trying different vsync settings like "vertical sync > adaptive (half refresh rate)". Make sure variable refresh rate (gsync / freesync) is disabled when using vsync.

Your monitor's OSD and software could also have settings that control the vsync / variable refresh rate settings, so see if that's the case.

2. In graphics options in-game try different fullscreen settings. e.g. fullscreen > exclusive

3. Try DX12. In GOG Galaxy open the aor page and click on the More button (right next to Play). Look for Additional Executables and use the DX12 one to launch art of rally. If the game is using DX12 after launching, you'll see dynamic resolution available in "options > graphics". You could disable it, or try diferent settings, but make sure to set anti-aliasing to FXAA or SMAA when dynamic resolution is enabled.

4. Discord's hardware acceleration or another application's overlay could be causing trouble. Try to disable those. Of course check Windows Task Manager to see if other software is not eating up resources while playing aor.

5. Depending on your GPU driver version, either update your GPU driver or roll-back to an older driver version. We got several reports over the last months that Nvidia driver updates caused issues for aor and other software. Issues were gone after updating or rolling back the troublesome update. That was the case for me as well - currently using an older driver.

Let me know if any of these help!

Point 1:
Already did that. Didn't help. My monitor has no G-Sync and my NVidia options have adaptive framerate disabled by default.

Point 2:
Also tried that. No difference.

Point 3:
Funny enough, the DX12 version makes all landscape details (trees, bushes) disappear, despite highest details in the options menu. They still seem to exist in-game, since the cars can bump into them.

Point 4:
That might be worth a try, though that is not an issue in any other, far more hardware-hungry game.

Point 5:
THAT is a bit too much effort for having a little game like this run without stuttering. Since NVidias Software is very broken at points, chances are I mess up my whole OS with re-rolling drivers.

So guys, thanks for all the help, it is incredible how much you as developers were engaged into this, and I applaud your engagement, but this bird seem to have flown. Thanks for all the help. Topic can get closed now.

Fair enough for the drivers.

For the vegetation not showing with DX12, try changing the vegetation renderer in-game from instanced to indirect or vice versa. Do it from the main menu, though, NOT while in a stage.
