Hey guys, not sure if it's me not using the commands correctly or if I've encountered another bug but I'm having serious trouble trying to finish "Guardian" in the main campaign.

The scenario starts easily enough. I put my squad in the APC, the convoy arrives, I get a head start and tell the convoy to follow. The problem starts at the hill, the APC has serious trouble going up it. I find it hard to believe such a vehicle could have such troubles on a paved road on a 30-35 degree slope. I tried letting an AI squad mate drive but they had the same problem.

This wouldn't be so bad if the convoy trucks would stay behind the APC but they just push past, sometimes knocking the APC to face the other direction. It seems the only way I can control the convoy is with the radio commands

The Humvee doesn't have enough room for my squad and taking both the Humvee and APC splits my forces when I get to the enemy reaching the cross roads (APC has trouble with the hill). Also, using formations pretty much ensures the APC will get stuck.

I can't scout ahead and take out the machine gunners first as it seems the machine gunners appear when the convoy trucks reach a certain point in the road (which subsequently get shot to pieces).

Any suggestions on how to tackle this mission?
Just tell the convoy to stop (0/0/1)

Pack everyone again into the APC and just have the patience to sneak up the hills.
When you have cleared a hot spot, tell the convoy to carry on (0/0/2).
And so on.....

Sorry for the delay, but I had to play the mission for myself too.

Thanks for the reply. I finally got through it by remembering there are 5 machine gunners before the first crossroads. After having the convoy turn right, it was fairly straight forward but I did ditch the APC sometime after that point.

Anyways, I just finished the main campaign today and the resistance campaign a few days ago. Just got the single missions to go and then it's one less game on the backlog :). Great game this but really tough as nails at times....

One of the tougher missions for me, since I've never been great at the radio commands - and because those cargo trucks are pretty fragile. Note that if a truck survives an attack but the driver dies, you can still crew the truck and get it to the destination.

While this mission frustrates me every time, I think it does a good job of showing the flexibility of the game engine with regard to scripting and commands.

Oh, you've barely scratched the surface of the game! Sooooo many mods out there, from single weapons and vehicles to single missions and full-blown story-based campaigns. IIRC some of the multiplayer matches can also be played solo, with bots filling in the empty spots. A couple of them are interesting though they didn't hold my interest for overly long.

Myself, I'm stuck on one mission of the Resistance campaign, after you get your hands on a few tanks and have to fend off an attack while you're on the run over open terrain. Been a long time since I played so I'll likely need to start from scratch to get the muscle memory back.

Thanks for the heads up there. I started messing around a bit with ArmA Gold but it's choppy as hell on my computer unless I set the resolution to 800x600, doesn't look like I'll be starting that game anytime soon :(. I'm definitely going to check out mods for this game once I've finished my dwindling backlog though :). To think when I bought ArmA, I was afraid of it being a copy of ever the popular "Clod of Doody". ;)

I remember that resistance mission, it took me all day to do. What I did was sneak around to the tanks, called in the reinforcements, took out the few soldiers guarding them. ordered 2 of my men into each tank and had them race up the hill. When the reinforcements arrived, I put them in the tank and bmp and raced up with hill with them and took the long way to the extraction point. I still lost a man but trying to fight the second wave of enemy tanks was just plain suicide.............

I didn't have too much trouble stealing the tanks in the first place - I chose the stealth option, took out the guys in the castle by myself, and managed not to get killed after calling in my guys. The mission right after (I think it's right after, or maybe after THAT), you've brought your newly acquired hardware down from the mountain stronghold and you're in open terrain with a shallow hillside and woods off to the left, you have a few tanks and APCs, and you're told that you need to prevent an oncoming tank platoon from breaking through. I never seem to have enough time to set up an adequate defense - either my guys are left too open and get cut down quickly, or I hide them a bit too well and they don't have good LOS to the enemy as they roll through.

That's my biggest weakness in the games: adequate control of the people I'm leading. Since I don't handle them well, I usually end up putting them in defensive spots or overwatch while I do most of the dirty work myself. In this mission, that doesn't work well.
