Having followed suggestions elsewhere on this site and installed a series of unofficial patches, I attempted to run the game in windowed mode by editing the launch shortcut, but now every time I try to launch the game it crashes immediately.

If I leave the game to automatically run in full-screen, there is no problem, it only occurs when I attempt to force the game to windowed mode.

Anyone else ran into this problem and have a solution?

Have you left the default settings in place?

Perhaps it's a conflict between what screen resolution you're telling the game to run at and entering windowed mode.

I guess I could try reinstalling everything and leaving out the higher resolution pack, see what happens then.

EDIT: With no unofficial patches it launches fullscreen regardless of what I tell it.

With just the Unofficial Arcanum Patch (Version 091225 ) it goes back to launching in a window and immediately crashing, so no obvious connection to any resolution changes.

I've never tried windowed mode, but my guess is that your best chance at getting it working is with the High Resolution mod. What resolution were you setting with the mod? Perhaps picking the correct resolution there will allow windowed mode to work properly. Or it could be that it's not possible to get Arcanum running in a window.

I was trying for 1024x768, which should be small enough to achieve windowed mode quite happily, and worked fine when I let it launch fullscreen (native res is 1920x1200).

I guess I can sit and try different resolutions, but given the number of options available I'm not sure how effective that plan would be.

Yeah, I think the mod lets you pick ANY resolution, even nonstandard ones, right? According to google, the unofficial patch version should allow windowed mode so I'm not sure what's causing the issue. Other than telling you to try the usual, i.e. updating graphics drivers, directx version, etc., I'm not sure what to tell you. Sorry!
Meant try leaving the default options (mainly the state of the game after a fresh install + the mods) then telling it to go windowed.

Some games just do not like to be windowed.
Any luck with this?

The readme for the Hi-Res patch says that you should be able to play windowed if you have UAP installed by adding "-window" but I get a crash every time I try too, seemingly regardless of the resolution I pick.

Also, any easier way to change the resolution besides rerunning the Hi-Res setup? It's just kind of annoying to have to sit through it uninstalling and reinstalling to try a different res.

Thanks!
Are you adding "-window" to the actual exe file. If so set up a new shortcut for the exe file. Once you have the shortcut created right click and go to properties. Then add the "-window" at the end of the target. Click okay and then run the game from the shortcut you just created.

I'm having this problem too, no one has figured out a fix yet?

Me too. I've installed the latest unofficial patch & am using the following command line...

C:\Users\Dave\Documents\GAMES\Arcanum\Arcanum.exe -window

...works fine on its own, but with the "-window" added it crashes. I played Arcanum on this very same computer back in October & I remember it was a bit tricky to get it running, but damned if I can remember what fixed it!
