I've been sticking a load of points into throwing, due to having fun with the boomerang. I've upgraded to the bladed boomerang but am at a stage where it's not really cutting it! (I know!)

I don't come across any other throwing weapons that often, so should I just give up and invest the points elsewhere?

Before anything else, have you invested in Throwing apprenticeship (gives you extra speed in real time, or extra turns in turn-based) and expertise (reduces or eliminates range penalties)?

First option: chakrams. You can get a great one early if you power shop the gypsy in Shrouded Hills. (Power shopping = check her inventory, walk one screen away, save game, fast forward one day, check again, reload if necessary.)

Second option: grenades. Learn to at least make Molotov cocktails, and blow up everything in sight. Profit! :D

Third option...

MODERATE SPOILER:

Third option: find the Throwing master in Black Root and accept her quest. After she trains you up to mastery (in exchange for the best throwing weapon in the game) pickpocket it back, using a Fate point if necessary. Don't just kill her, or you'll piss off the whole town. You'll get the best use out of it if you get your MA up to at least 75; even without that, its critical hit percentage is absolutely nuts!
Thanks for that! I'll try the explosive discipline (as I'd prefer tech over magic in this game), and start off with molotov. Just need some rags + fuel!

Molotovs are awesome, and higher-tier grenades have useful tactical purposes (like the stun grenade). Strangely, they don't damage you or your allies so you can throw them at your feet to damage enemies and push them away from you. Weird, but effective. A grenadier is one of the easier tech characters to play.

Having said that, there are also some magical chakrams, which means throwing can work for a magic character too, although I haven't tried it myself (I've actually not played a mage yet).
If you're playing a Magick character, the mastery quest is the way to go. If you're playing a Tech character, grenades are a good option, and there's also an easter egg throwing weapon that Tech types can use without penalty (but you'll never find it unless you look it up).

Once your character is able to craft explosive grenades you'll never need money again. You can make them from ingredients you find in trash bins, and sell them for hundreds of gold each.
Throwing is perfectly viable, I'd even say it's quite powerful. You'll want the aerial decapitator - google it to find out how to get it, it involves an easter egg you won't normally be able to encounter before the midgame.

It's fun to play with — among other things, I love its sound effect — but it's hardly the best weapon in the game. For one thing, it has a range limited to the length of its chain; for another, its critical hit chance is normal, which is to say that it's quite a bit bekiw that of Azram's Star, which critically hits for extra damage more than half the time (and therefore averages more damage per hit than the decapitator does).
If you're a full-tech character the AD is the throwing weapon of choice, though. It's a neutral weapon (non-tech, non-magick) so anyone can use it without penalty. Azram's Star is the better weapon, but it's magick aligned.

And yes, Throwing is an excellent skill in Arcanum.
