SheBear: Definitely use turn-based (fast turn-based if you want stuff to happen a bit quicker on screen).

Did you level up as much as you could at the Crash Site/before heading to Shrouded Hills? Exploring the Crash Site fully and killing all the wolves and kites there is important, I think, to making sure you can stand up to some of the stuff in and around Shrouded Hills. The wolves in the path away from the Crash Site (after the spot on the map where you can access the world map) are definitely hard, they are real wolves and not ailing wolves for the most part, so if that is what you are having trouble with don't worry too much.

Around Shrouded Hills itself I seem to only remember ailing wolves, which shouldn't be too much of an issue if you are actually hitting them with whatever weapon you have. What kind of stats/skills do you have? And what magic are you using/have available? The early game stuff is sometimes (especially against Lukan and the gate guards) unforgiving in the way you spec your character and so if you aren't quite as powerful as you "should" be it is probably more difficult that it really needs to be.

TCMU2009: I think I'm level 2, and I've given points to my melee skills and the harm spell. I've heard that spell is really good, and I killed a healthy wolf with it, but not before it killed virgil, so I reloaded a save. I may go back to the crash site, cause I don't think I fully explored the area. Part of my trouble is that it just takes me along time to get into old rpgs like this. I think I've got the interface mostly figured out though.
Ok, yeah, you shouldn't be too badly off if you have harm! :)

Definitely change the combat to turn based and you should be able to deal enough damage in that more controlled manner to take on wolves with more ease. If you are already in Shrouded Hills, be aware you can't actually go back to the Crash Site, the world map is blocked for you until you get over the bridge leading out of town. But since you're only level 2 starting over wouldn't hurt you that much.

And it is totally understandable getting confused with an old game like this. I think I'm lucky that this is one of my first games where I really played it a lot and got entirely absorbed, and so I still remember how to play, and where to go, and what to do all these years later. But it was definitely a different experience playing it for the first time!

I've got the combat and interface all figured out, and just as I've started all the quests in shrouded hills, I can't move on because of the thieves on the bridge. I've tried the fight at least ten times, and virgil and I die every single one. I can kill Lucarn easily, but the two ogres kill me as soon as I run out of fatigue. I've even tried potions and everything.

Have you done the bank quest? Cleared out the mine and the old Panarii Temple? Those are good opportunities for XP/some loot for money.

Since you can kill Lucan easily try instead attacking the ogres first. They deal the most damage and are actually the most dangerous, if you can kill one or both of them before you run out of fatigue to cast spells then you shouldn't have as much of an issue staying alive fighting Lucan (the staying conscious while Lucan beats on you might be an issue though - so be wary of ending a turn with very low fatigue).

Also you can try experimenting how far away you need to be to start casting spells (to increase the distance they have to come to you and thus waste action points for their turn) - you don't have to do the whole dialogue to start combat, you can just attack them since you know you need to kill them.
