I heard great things about this game and decided to try it, but immediately ran into a problem. I download, pass the file integrity test, install, and launch the game just fine. But the front menu is where I have to stop: my mouse cursor is super, super sensitive (I move my finger on the trackpad a centimetre and the mouse shoots across the screen so fast I can't click on any of the menu options - I have to use the E key to exit the game).

I have tried adjusting the mouse tracking control in Windows XP (and on the Mac OS - please see the specs below) to the lowest speed possible, and there is no change in-game. I'm disheartened as the game is unplayable at this point, and advice would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Specs: Windows XP Pro SP2 (virtual machine via Parallels Desktop, run through Mac OS X 10.4.11)

Have you tried using the arrow keys to access the options to lower the mouse sensitivity in-game? That's the only thing I can think of. Sorry if I'm not much help.

The arrow keys don't work for me in-game (at least for the menu screens, which is all I can somewhat get to right now because of the mouse problem). I can navigate the main menu using certain keys (O for options, E for Exist, etc.), but once I go to a submenu (like Options) I can't use any keys to move or get me back to the main menu, so I can't get to any mouse options in-game (Is there one? I only see Game, Video, Sound, and Done in the Options screen, and there's nothing about mouse or key control)
I think I have seen other people have similar problems for other games in the GOG forums. I vaguely remember something about turning off mouse acceleration, or turning off 3D acceleration. Try adding "-no3d" to the shortcut path for Arcanum and running it again.

This is from my sketchy memory though; you might want to search the GOG forums for other similar mouse problems. I think it can happen often when running old games in a new OS.

Yes, I have tried the "no3d" shortcut and relaunched, and nothing changes.
Hello, it looks like the problem I had, except I'm using VirtualBox on Linux host. If there is a mouse integration option in Parallels Desktop, you can try to disable it and see if it helps.

Though I did try to look for this option when you suggested, I only today found a work-around that gets rid of the ridiculously speedy mouse.

SOLUTION: Re-install Arcanum on a fixed OS (no Parallels' virtual OS; the VM program appears to override any mouse acceleration commands, both in the host OS and the virtual one, back to standard defaults when you're not looking and will keep the mouse racing too fast on-screen)
Sorry but is someone able to explain this solution in plain English? I am trying to run Arcanum on a virtual machine running Windows XP Pro 32 Bit and am having the same problem.

What is meant by a fixed OS and how do i do that? I am running VMWare fusion.
Sorry, i figured it out after all, for anyone else using VM Ware here is the fix:

On some occasions, the automatic detection may not operate correctly. In these cases, you can set the mouse mode yourself.

To set the mouse mode:

Go to VMware Fusion > Preferences.
From the Gaming dropdown, choose Always optimize mouse for games.

Note: You need to click back in the virtual machine for your mouse to be recognized. Hereafter, you need to press ctrl+command to release your mouse from the virtual machine and you need to click in the virtual machine to return your mouse to the virtual machine.

If the Always optimize mouse for games setting does not resolve the issue, select Never optimize mouse for games from the Gaming dropdown.
