During a battle with spiders at bessie toone's room in the mine virgil had a critical failure and lost his staff. After the battle he picked it back up and its in his inventory but he hasn't re-equipped it yet? I have tried to equip him manually but it doesn't work. now when we go to battle he uses his hands and fists. Please advise.

i have successfully equipped virgil with a dagger but the staff still doesn't equip.

i wouldnt worry about it to much i gave virgil many weapons much better thought out the game even swords . just throw it away

Yeah you'll definitely get better weapons for Virgil but it does seem weird that he didn't equip the staff again automatically. Have you tried taking it form him and then giving it back to him? That might "reset" it or something. Otherwise, just hang on and give him some better weapons as sirsmithy advised.
