I just started playing and have tried out a few different characters, settling on a human "gentleman fighter" with the child of a hero background. I explored the crash site, did the Arbalah quest, and headed to Shrouded Hills. I tried to befriend the Half-ogre in the inn but he wouldn't come with me. I looked at my character and strength and constitution had went up a point while most other stats had lowered by a few each. I had an unidentified helm on, but when I identified it, it was only charmed, not cursed. The only injury I had was a scar, and I had no curses. After I identified the helm and walked around a little bit my stats went back to normal. What could cause a random, temporary change in stats?

Wearing almost any helm will lower your Perception by 1 while worn; helms restrict vision.

Having a scar will lower your Beauty by 1 or more, until you pay to have it fixed by a healer (or acquire enough skill in Healing to do it yourself).

The Axe of Strength (which may be randomly available at the Shrouded Hills blacksmith, and is definitely available in Tarant) will raise your Strength and Constitution by +1 while equipped.

Other than that, I'm perplexed. If you're playing the vanilla game (not patched with Drog's UAP, that is) then certain cursed items will have permanent rather than temporary penalties. And in any case, non-cursed items won't harm you while unidentified; they simply won't perform up to their full potential.

My advice is to check your equipment (including weapons and armor) one by one, putting them on and seeing which (if any) of them are affecting your stats in an adverse way. Please post here to let us know if you figure it out.

(Oh, and FWIW the half-ogre is a bit picky; he won't join you unless your Charisma is 9 or higher.)

By any chance, did you happen to order a drink at the Shrouded Hills inn, or accidentally (or purposefully) drink one of those 3 wine bottles from the crash site? Your stat changes look like the effects of alcohol, and those do wear off after some time. Scars and helmets only lower Beauty and Perception, respectively, by one point, so anything besides those penalties could be from being drunk.

And yes, the half-ogre can only be recruited with 9+ Charisma.

EDIT: Yep, definitely looks like you were drunk. Here's what wine does, according to the effect.mes file:

IN -3, DX -1, ST +1, CN+1, CH -2, PE -1

It is the vanilla game. And that's what happened. I had a drink from the barkeep right before talking to the half-ogre. After I sobered charisma whent back up and he joined. Thanks for the answers!

I... am embarrassed that I didn't know this. Maybe I need to start drinking more. Or at all.
