I
have searched this forum and generally online for a recommended list of which order to do the quests, but I haven't found anything yet.

I am having my typical "90's game can't find stuff/why on earth would I want to kill a level 37 something when I'm a level 7 and have and AC of 2?" problems, so I was hoping there was someone here who knows which areas/quests are level appropriate.

Alternatively, a list online somewhere would be okay, too.

Thanks

Arcanum is the very definition of a sandbox game, so quests abound at all levels. That being said, in general the quests you're likely to find early on (the crash site, the first town, etc.) are generally appropriate to your level — though some builds have it easier than others. Once you get to Tarant, the main city in the game, quest availability runs the gamut; but again, many of the harder ones either won't appear at all at first, or you'll get a dialogue option along the lines of, "Come back when you're ready."

Your logbook will keep track of which quests you've heard about, accepted, and/or completed. So if one of them is too tough for now, just walk away and come back to it later. Keep in mind that certain builds find certain quests easier than others: you don't have to fight your way out of the first town if you know how to bluff your way out, or if you start down the evil route, etc.

Another trick is to randomly sleep outdoors between towns, for days at a time. The random encounter generator will provide you with plenty of opportunities to up your XP; just remember to save after each successful encounter, in case the next one proves tougher than you anticipated.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

So, there isn't any kind of guide that says, for instance,
if you're a level 5, you should be...
If you're a level 10, you should be...
etc.

I think I can see roaming the countryside in my future for a while. :)

I've never seen one. Even the official strategy guide contains a general walkthrough for the main quest, and a list of available side quests for each area in a separate sidebar. You can generally gauge the difficulty of a given quest by looking at its XP reward, but even then I could be a level 10 tank, a level 15 smooth talker, or a level 20 pacifist with a trio of hired fists (or guns, or axes... you get the idea).

A protip, though: magic is somewhat overpowered, so a mage will generally have an easier time of it than a techie or a thief. And of course, big dumb muscle works too.

Okie, then, guess I'll wander around and see what I can find to get myself into trouble. Thanks for the help.

My pleasure. And if you're having too much trouble someplace or with a particular quest, feel free to ask.
Gamefaqs has some worthwhile walkthroughs.

In general a playthrough should go something like:

Shrouded hills
Tarant
Dernholm
Black Mountain Clan Mines
Ashbury
Isle of Despair
Wheel Clan
Stillwater
Qintarra
Caladon
Roseborough
Tsen Ang
Thanatos
and then 2 more locations that would be pretty relevant spoilers.

There's some necessity to go back to Tarant and Caladon sometimes to get some info to progress.

Gamefaqs, gamebanshee, mike's rpg center are all pretty easy to understand information centers for the game. They'll steer you straight.
Black Mountain Clan Mines is a huge spike in difficulty compared to early game areas so I find it easy to go there after completed everything possible in:

Shrouded Hills
Tarant
Ashbury
Black Root
Dernholm

and other points of interest on map in between, so I will be around level 25 when I get there.

That's the point, more or less.
