Hi. After a long hiatus from this game, I reloaded my Muck Evil Eye game (where I just let the game level Muck) and tried to continue on. Not as easy as Muck has low intelligence which makes quests even harder to do. I digress though.

*spoilers.... maybe?*

I've got to get the the island of Thantos, which requires me to get 50000 gold. I have about 25000, which is what I've hoarded over the game. I don't know how to raise more money. I've done pretty much all the sidequests I can find (or that don't glitch on me, even with the unofffical patch) and I have no idea how to raise such a massive sun.

Have you already looted the caves on your way? They tend to contain many items you can sell.
Random encounters can also give you free items to sell (after you take them from your enemies' bodies, that is).
Also, if you have a dumb character, I can't recommend crafting items on your own, but if you have a NPC companion who can make some items, you should try asking them to do so (after providing them with the necessary ingredients, of course). I've found that buying ingredients for cheap (and some are outright free, lying around in trash bins /such as charcoal/ or the ground /some plants/) and creating items which then you sell is a great way of accumulating money.
How are you at combat? If you can hold your own fairly well, and have a decent carrying capacity (followers help immensely) I'd recommend Kree (635W, 1205S). The place is full of bandits and they all carry reasonably valuable equipment. Certainly it's how I made most of my fortune.

You'll likely need several trips to make the most of it, and it can be rather risky given the large number of enemies. Plus the equipment is generally both large and heavy. But if you can dispose of pockets of them at a time the place is an absolute goldmine.

As an alternative, I am fairly sure you can instead pursue the Stringy Pete quest in order to circumvent the fee.

The easiest way i've found to raise money early on without finding things to fight (usually because i'm a low level wuss and need to get some gear to be able to survive combat, but 'I already turned this part of the country into a barren safe wasteland' also counts..) is to pick up Jayna and have her start making fatigue packs. They sell for about 44 each, that's 176 coins each make, and the ingredients are less than 10. I need Jayna for healing anyways. If you have more leveled characters to play with, Eye Gear is mechanical 4, Magnus can eventually make it iirc, and they sell for 8xx coin at a junk dealer for about 30-40ish coin in parts that you usually find in the store every day. If you don't want any techies, buy the plan for Fuel and some tech manuals and start brewing. Wine and yeast are both easy to find. Probably there are better found schematics for money raising, but that one needs very little to do and is easy to find. Might take a lot of grinding to make 25,000 that way, but it can be done.

Believe it or not I've easily amassed well over 50,000 gold within an hour of starting the game. I'm not sure if this will work with your character type or point distribution, but I've had a lot of luck with it.

This trick requires about a level 2 in lock-picking skills. Head to Shrouded Hills and advance the time to evening. Advance it again 2 more hours and you'll see that the shopkeepers will have locked up and started heading to bed.

Once the shopkeepers are asleep the goal is to pick your way into the shopkeepers bedrooms, and ultimately their chests. Be sure to save your game before beginning and throughout at least until you get the hang of what you're doing.

The reason this works so well is that the shopkeepers chests as well as wallets (gold) refresh every 24 hours. The trick to getting them to do this is to move a full screen or two away from the shop before advancing time another 24 hours or so.

If you already have pick-pocketing skills you can try to pick the pockets of the blacksmith and the importer for the keys to their back rooms which will help speed things up a bit. Also, I've noticed that letting 48 hours pass rather than 24 seems to have a much better ROI (especially at the importers), time-wise. I tried 72 hours as well and saw little to no change so I stick to 48.

Are you sure you didn't forget anything in the areas you explored so far? And I mean ANYTHING that's not nailed down, it adds up no matter how much of a piece of junk it is (junk dealer's handy to get rid of those), even when that requires storing stuff neatly in chests around the area as you go along and then making several trips back to the city to sell things batch by batch. After that (admittedly very tedious) Black Mountain Clan Mines part early on I was already quite good, considering how many trips I made to sell stuff. (Also, while you keep making those trips, you may occasionally get lucky with a random encounter with decent gear.)
But keep in mind that profit is the difference between income and expenses, so keep your spending very well in check too. Casting's free, using technological items isn't, and if you have very quick firing shooters in your party their ammo may add up to a bit of a money drain too.
Way back when I played it, when I got to that point where I was supposed to raise 50k or do a quest (assume that's not an option for your character) I just laughed, because I had nearly 100k. But then again I'm always an extremely frugal pack rat, so that happens in all games...

EDIT: Hm, just looked at the date. Guess it was solved already. Woops. Uh well.

did you pickpocket the blacksmith in shrouded hill?
Just want to reiterate what RRD said. If you manage to pick Rizsette's key from him (only requires about 1 into pick pocketing skills) he stores his gold in his chest unlike other shopkeepers, so if you walk a full screen or two away like RRD said and advance time 24-hours his gold will be refreshed somehwere between 500 and 2500 gold.

This is an easy way to do things, but that is what Arcanum is all about--using the huge degree of playability that you have to take your own path. :)

Happy gaming :)
