I've beaten the game a few times now and I've never seen Joachim. He doesn't show up after I resurrect Virgil. As far as I can tell, I'm doing everything right to advance the plot to that point... is this a bug?

Yeah it definitely seems to be.

I haven't beaten the game in a couple of years (with Virgil in my party at least) so I forget, but when you first showed up in Caladon and walked over the bridge from the outside/farm area into the city proper did he meet you? I seem to remember that happening, but not when it is supposed to happen.

But yeah, if he isn't showing up in the Sobbing Onion then I think that is a bug. Are you all patched up and such? (Official and Unofficial)

Same here!

Went to Sobbing Onion basement, Joachim was nowhere to be seen. He's supposed to be near the bridge is he?
Going to play the game again when I can.

I've patched all up, as per the Sticky.

I have yet to see him at all, anywhere. I have both patches, plus the high-res one.
Try temporarily uninstalling the high-res patch. (It won't mess up your saves.)

I read that suggestion elsewhere, and it didn't work.

I've just played another character to this point, and I noticed something. I again didn't see Joachim as I came into town, but as soon as I started the conversation with Virgil after resurrecting him, I saw Joachim appear for a brief moment at the door of the room, but he disappeared before walking in.
Forum ate my post.

If Virgil runs away, you're supposed to meet Joachim in the basement, not at either city entrance. It's definitely a buggy proximity trigger. Try uninstalling HR, cleaning cache (run CleanCache.bat) and going through the basement scene again.

Success story:
I use 1680*1050 resolution. About everything seems to work just fine. The only thing that does not work is when Joachim is supposed to come to the underground room at the Sobbing Onion after Virgil is ressurrected. One time I managed to see a glimpse of him near the double doors, but then he just vanished. So I had to uninstall the patch for that event to work properly.
If it fails, here's what Muro has to say:
All Joachim functionally does is provide some linear dialogue. It doesn't affect anything in the game and you will not miss anything because of him not showing up in your game.

My suggestion is familiarizing yourself with the dialogue here (all he says after the conversation is over is a "Good luck to you, Living One." floating line) and pretend that it happened in your game.
What is cleancache.bat? It's not in my files anywhere.

I know Joachim isn't THAT big of a deal, but it's the nostalgia factor. I got the demo version of Arcanum from some game magazine's CD ages ago and was immediately dying to learn the whole story, especially wanting to meet Joachim. Now that I finally have the full game, I want to see it happen.

Right, newer UAPs don't come with it. Delete everything from data\proto and modules\arcanum\maps (make a backup of the whole game, though, just in case of... something).

This didn't work.

I've been running the game with -no3d and -doublebuffer because of another issue that arose yesterday, and I had a conversation with Virgil I'd not seen ever before about the book Joachim leaves in Stillwater. I was hoping that between this and uninstalling the patch and deleting the files you suggested meant the conversation in the basement would happen too, but it still didn't.

Huh, that's pretty bizarre. I just completed this sidequest story arc thingy today and it worked out fine for me, UAP and all. Could it be some kind of incompatibility with your system?
It's entirely possible. I have the game installed on another computer, but haven't gotten that game to that point yet. I should play that one and see what happens.

You can always transfer your saves. I, uh, don't remember where they're located, but I did it once.
