I've played through Arcanum multiple times since being a kid (strangely, I've never once completed it) but I'm trying out being a technologist kind of guy and it seems to me the flow spectrometer is bugged. I have it equipped as my shield, I have charges in my inventory, but I have yet to detect a trap in the black mountain mines. I'm running the usual assortment of mods you would expect - the unofficial patch, high res, and high quality town maps, but nothing else. What the dickens is going on here? How do I get the damn thing to work?

Do you have a supply of batteries? I'm pretty sure that I've read that it runs off of charges.
Flow Spectrometer has always worked for me, too. It's possible you're doing something wrong, but I can't guess what that might be.

Does it have an On and Off switch? I don't remember.
I did indeed have charges (I forgot about this thread and ended up just playing through anyway - finished it this time!) but still nothing. Alas. Such is life. Thanks anyway!
I've used the FS extensively and always found it to work. Remember to walk, not run, while detecting traps.

The last playthrough, though, I dispensed with it in favor of Spot Traps skill, because the Spot Traps master quest will get you a truly stupendous magic item that will work for a tech character so long as you keep your tech aptitude below 70 or so.
