I'm trying to complete Gladys' quest in Dernholm, but every time I speak with Archibald I get two conversation options that end with him attacking me. After knocking him unconscious, I speak with his son and then Gladys again, but he immediately tries to attack me everytime he sees me.

This is preventing me from completing the quest "the hard way".

Is there any way to prevent his hostility or end it while preserving his life?

First, do you have a point in Persuasion? This is absolutely essential for completing the quest without attacking him.

Spoilers follow.

Second, after he rebuffs you the first time, tell him you're leaving. Talk only to his son; then go back and tell him what Bernard said, and that you suspect Gladys of liking him all along. Don't be aggressive or sarcastic, and offer to return the ring on his behalf. (Don't demand any money either, unless you have at least two or three points in Persuasion.)

Whether this would still work after he's fought with you, I don't know; my suspicion is that it may already be too late, and you'll have to revert to a save (or a new game) from before your first unsuccessful interaction.

Or (and this just occurred to me; I haven't checked it out for myself yet) have you tried pickpocketing the ring from him, either before you speak to him the first time or possibly while he's unconscious? Knowing how the game likes to give multiple solutions to problems, I suspect that something like this might have a chance at succeeding as well.

In any case, best of luck.

I had to force a good response out of him.
The problem may have been my half-orc background (racist?) even though I had 7BE, 14CH, -7Reaction modifier, Expert Persuasion, and 2 skill points to play with.

Um, yeah. That could work too.

Archibald, a racist? Could be; I thought that grouchy old geezer just hated everybody! ;)

The last time I played as a Half-Orc, I didn't bother with Persuasion (and therefore never tried to recover Gladys' ring). It's possible that the script is set up so that Half-Orcs can't solve the quest the standard way; I'll add that to the list of things to look into, along with whether picking his pocket would work.
There is a spell that makes everybody like you more - after casting it, he shouldn't attack you any more.
Maybe you have a background that makes males like you less and females like you more?
Sorry, I don't remember the name of the spell and the character trait...

Sounds like you're thinking of the mental spell Charm. It does affect NPC reaction... but only for as long as the spell is maintained. Once it ends, IIRC anyone you've spoken with (possibly realizing they've been played) will like you even less than before.

I couldn't find one that did that. The Ladies Man (or for females, Super Model) trait substantially increases your PC's beauty; but for everyone, not just the opposite sex.

Unless and until proven otherwise, I'm gonna agree with the OP's guess that Archibald (like most everyone else in Arcanum) just doesn't like Half-Orcs very much.

When the charm was over, Archibald already liked me for helping him out with his relationship :)

Maybe 'more extreme reactions' then? Those who like you, will like you even more, but those who don't like will hate you now. Archibald starts with a little antagonistic reaction, with this backgound he can't resist and attacks after a short conversation.
I was a half-elf when he attacked me for no reason.

Makes sense; that one exists. It's called Extreme Personality, and I'll admit I've never actually played it myself.
I actually am using Extreme Personality, so that in combination with being Half-Orc probably led to his hostility.

I guess extreme personality alone would turn him hostile :) My charismatic half-elf made him attack.
