Some of the mechanics are very confusing in this game. I have a melee build and using the feather-weight axes and this is what I see: http://i.imgur.com/7JJOR.png

It's the Arcanum logo with a chance to hit of exactly 0%. When I switch to an enchanted sword or to my fists (war gauntlets), the CTH goes up to around 80%. Could anyone explain why there is such a big gulf between the two weapons? I'm not getting a low-strength message (I believe it's around 15 for me) for using the weapon, I'm rank 4 in melee with expert level, and I'm not encumbered.

A Gore Guard is a magical enemy, which means tech items (firearms and some melee stuff like the feather-weight axe) will have a lowered CTH. That seems like a really massive drop though, even on my firearms guy I've never had 0 CTH.
Possibly the OP's character's tech aptitude is low? Gore Guards are pretty magically aligned, and so that might be overpowering everything else.

Though that also seems really low to me though...
Hm, are you maybe a magically aligned character yourself so you're getting an additional to hit penalty from that?
I'm at 15 MA. Does being MA mean I'm less effective against other MA characters? That seems odd. Here's my Character chart: http://i.imgur.com/Y4XMB.png

While we're at it, what do those half-ranks in Dodge and Melee mean? I started with them.

No, but having MA means you're less effective with tech weapons (such as the feather-weight axe). That's why your hit chance is so low, since you're essentially getting two MA penalties: From attacker and defender. The half ranks are from your race or background. They're not quite equivalent to a full rank, but can be trained as if they were (so with a half rank in Melee you can become an Apprentice).

bouchacha: Edit: I had no idea that featherweight axes were Tech aptitude, I thought they were neutral (and the description doesn't say otherwise). That makes a lot more sense I suppose.
The way you can tell is that the background of the weapon icon will be a gear. Magic items have the Arcanum magic symbol and neutral have nothing.

I dig this game but man, some things are super obscure and I actually read through the manual, I must've missed it if it was there. I chalked up a lot of the pretty icons as ornamental :)

Yeah, definitely. Part of the problem is that the manual's pretty long and has a lot of flavor, which is entertaining, but can make actually trying to find specific sections and mechanics kind of a pain. I have no idea if the tech/magick thing is in the manual, I only actually read it after I beat the game for the first time. xd
Yeah there are definitely some things that aren't really discussed in the manual, possibly because they changed after the manual was written. For example, the way that tech manuals work when crafting, and how to know the "aptitude" numbers for crafting found schemaitcs, isn't really discussed, and I had to find out by googling.

Yeah, I recall reading somewhere that the manual was written way before the game came out. In fact, one of the screenshots uses a different portrait for Virgil (which was later used for... that adventurer wizard guy whose name I forget).
It is a pretty huge problem how much of the game's inner workings remain a mystery to the player. I wrote a FAQ to solve this for new players, so they don't just get frustrated and quit and can still enjoy this awesome game. http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/914155-arcanum-of-steamworks-and-magick-obscura/faqs/63974[/url]

Check it out, it will probably help a lot amigo.
