For a first continuous game, after completing the campaign, what are the pros and cons of playing the base game vs. playing Venice? Are they very different games?

New Ships
a new NPC (Venice) with new quests and stuff to buy
Cities can be bought - no war needed to take over islands
Sabotage
On low difficulty you are the only one that will use this things aggressively (the enemy will never sabotage you or try to buy your city) on higher diffculty this will change.

There's no reason to not play Venice unless you are playing the campaign. One thing is that the base game doesn't have a statistics building, which is very helpful!
