I just completed my first runthrough and got one of the worst endings due to my overzealous approach to playing games. I tend to like to skip ahead and find ways of getting more powerful earlier in the game, so I went through "the Void" early and it cost me pretty much the whole ending of the game. However, I saved the Monster Mask prisoner and then beat him for the Dark Angelus, and also saved all the prisoners so I could get the staff that boosts magic power. After that, I was pretty powerful, made easy work of Duraga, and then maxed out my levels. 3/4 through the game I used a guide, mostly for the platforming hints and for identifying items.
But I missed the proper ending so I need to go back and do it again on NG+. Hopefully I won't mess this one up!
To be perfectly honest, this game is amazing. I absolutely love it. The complaints about it being too hard confound me. I am just under 40 hours in and I didn't find the combat or boss fights all that hard. Once I figured out their attack patterns, I was able to get through most of them in one try, but some were harder than the others. The Monster Mask is this games version of the FF7 Green Weapon, the hardest fight in the game but not the end boss. Once you beat him, everything else feels much easier. It's an awesome fight though, and it will push your reflexes to the brink.
You may want to spend some time practicing your combos though, because once you learn the nuances of the combat you will clean up in this game. You have to level up and choose the right weapons. However, your success in this game will depend on your skill level. If you practice and learn how to manage distance, use ranged weapons, and then strike in close when necessary, you will do well.
I also found that how you power up and use your skill points is a big deal. Prioritize magic for the chick and combat for the dude. Also, don't forget to use your buff spells, because you can link them together between the two characters and gain some powerups before tough fights.
This is a great game that can really push your game playing skills to the max, however, it isn't "so hard" on Normal Difficulty that it is unplayable. In fact, I expected it to be harder. Very addictive game and the developers did an amazing job. Going to boost the difficulty on NG+ and see where that takes me...
