I was just about to check in two bipidri when I saw my entire camera contents was empty!
Is there any way to get back to vowtown? Or do I need to load a reaaaaly old save?

You can go back. I think what you do is you leave Democratus out of your party, and then go and talk to it wherever it is waiting. One of the dialogue options is that you want to visit the planet again. There are a few points in the game where this is not possible (any point where you are unable to pick your party members) so if you're in one of those parts just keep going until you're able to choose your party again.

Either just copy the pics from your "old save" into the new one (easy enough to find in the anachronox directory) or you can actualy go back after a certain story event.

If nothing else helps you can always cheat/teleport urself back ;)

Bumping a year-old thread because I'm also interested in returning to Democratus (I think there's a treasure I forgot to pick up there). However, I only get the two dialog options to either let it join me or to leave it behind. :/

The dialog option to return to Democratus may not be available until later in the main storyline. I forget exactly when, but you can definitely go back (I did it).

Anyone else remember the specifics for when the option becomes available?

Correct - you need to complete the Villain ship and following missions first; then after Votown for the second time you'll be able to go back.
