When I launch a game of Amnesia: Dark Descent, I am unable to see anything other than the crosshairs. Objects appear to exist and I'm able to move, I think but all I can see is a black screen. Is it supposed to be like this?

1. Make sure that you have updated graphics card drivers and your graphics card supports the game.
2. Turn off post effects
Go to Options > Graphics > Advanced and here you can turn on/off all of the different effects in the game. No restart of the game is needed for these changes, so simple go back to game and see if it has been fixed.

A common problem with the game is that integrated Intel graphic chips aren't supported (see GOG's system requirements). You don't use by any chance a laptop with this hardware, do you? If so, getting Intel's newest drivers might help.
The technical support forum of Frictional Games has a very interesting official thread about graphics card troubleshooting that might help you. See here: https://www.frictionalgames.com/forum/thread-24129.html
