I play under Windows 7 (x64) and I expercience the same trouble as many others: The game just runs too fast. To avoid this you can do the following:

- Go to the game settings menu (you can do this ingame) by clicking the "M" in the very top.
- Then choose "slow mode" (NOT fast mode).
- Finally decrease the "game speed" by about 10 %.
- Accept those settings.

As a result the game runs with good speed and even the scrolling seems to be normal. Unfortunately the game sometimes switches back to "fast mode", when you start it again, so you maybe have to adjust this again later. However the "game speed" stays as it should.

Hope this helps you a little.
Same thing here with Windows 7 (x32). I just found the same tricks, and they work great!

Also, if the game reverts to "fast mode" you can simply press Ctrl+D. That's the shortcut for changing speed mode.

Actually... It looks like it was supposed to be that way - old reviews also mentionned issues with that... which has surprised me, so I've searched for an explanation about that.

Reading Cossacks' manual (the previous "episode" in a way, from the same developers), I've found that the developers put these options (speed modes and game speed) to allow for fine tuning on a large range of computers. According to the manual, game speed controls ALL the in-game calculations, hence a possibly choppy camera movement. Speed mode only impacts the speed of units (animations), and was meant to allow for an increased or slowed pace during combats (a tactic and "arcade" feeling, as they write it). At the time the first game came out, they advised to keep speed at maximum, and only to decrease it on very high-end configurations, on which indeed the game would run at light-speed. Obviously, this is mandatory now... Maybe they also did that to circumvent the issues which could arise in DDraw with tons of units on-screen ??? (the game seems to be using it, mostly). This doesn't explain why the game reverts to fast mode after a restart though, so that's maybe a bug.

That's a bit of a wild guess, but most of this is in the "first game" manual, page 13. That's a bit of an odd concept, but at least it makes the game's speed easy to control on high-end PCs (not something which can be said about some other old games...).

Those are some interesting facts, I did not know them. Well, although it truely sucks to adjust the game speed more than once, your hint to use Ctl+D is just great. Thank you!

Please people, I have played these games from the beginning. American Conquest is NOT cossacks 2. Cossacks 2 is a complete other game, in the Napoleonic ara. The company screwed it up with the game and dropped it and in the meantime American Conquest was made. I have all games on cd from the day. I got it on GOG and indeed the same error I also had on the Original one occuered here. Thats the speed problem. The devs in the day got cocky and never wanted to fix it. I had a chat with them about the problems in Cossacks 2 and in American Conquest. They just replied that they didnt care. Thats also why the gaming company whent downwards.
