I seem to be having trouble running in the game. according to the manual you double tap the up arrow to run, however, this only ever seems to work part of the time. I've tried lowering the dosbox cycles to around 10k, and it didn't really seem to work. I lowered further to 8k and it still didn't help much
Nah, the running is a little bit bugged in the first game. As far as I can tell, the regzular version had this, too.
In AitD2 and 3, that problem has been fixed. Triggering to run is a lot smoother in these games.
Wait.....what? You can run? Why didn't anyone tell me about this? Next you'll tell me there's ways of using your brain rather than fight? No no no, this does not make sense at all ;-)

Seriously though, I never read my manual, never realised I was supposed to be able to run
Double tap the "walk forward"-button and your character is supposed to run.
As said before, the running is bugged in the first game and you need to tapm the button several times, before Carnby or Emily will run.
It's also the only way to pass the bridge to the caverns.
I've found that holding forward while going into your inventory, then holding it again as you come back out of it usually gets your character of choice running. Other than that, keep at it until you get the absolute perfect timing for tapping the key.
Had trouble only with the first one. ~6500 cycles turned out to be the optimal value for me, so anyone who have trouble running, try it.
This has always been a big issue with AITD. I remember having the exact same problem when I first played the game on a 486 dx2 (good old times). There's even a scene in AITD3 where you are absolutely required to run, if you fail you die. So that specific scene was always frustrating.
Press CTRL+F11 to "slow down".
Worked like a charm for me.

Oh, and CTRL+F12 to "speed up", if need be.

Yeah, I understand you... I suffer on this Scene too. on my old Windows 95 edition "Alone in the dark 3 Ghost in town" I played on a powerfull....PENTIUM 2 (LOL). it was frutrating too. because I only can run when I lucky. It was relative more dificult because you can`t control the speed on windows... Thanks to god on DOS was MOSLOW (XD).

well and for the problem Why do not try to change some values on your .conf archive. try this.

[dosbox]
memsize=32

[cpu]

core=auto
cycles=max
cycleup=1000
cycledown=1000

Relatively The speed of your procesor must be increse. and the movement must be really smooth. in theory the control answer will improve.

NOTE: This config values I use for games like doom and quake (on 320x200 of course). Tomorrow I will download again my AITD and test diferent configurations on it.

Good luck.
For the DOSBox savvy there is a loader for the game that lets you adjust the double tap detection time:

Adjusting with Ctrl+F11/F12 worked very well in my case too. I just slowed the game down until it started freezing, then moved it back up to a comfortable speed and voila ! Now I'm able to run most of the time when it used to be quite hard to achieve.

I concur. I have the boxed original and played it "in the day", sure you can run but it can "drag" a little :)

Nice! This worked for me. I was walking backwards everywhere because the characters walk faster backwards than forwards. I can now successfully double tap at 6000 cycles.
Thanks for posting the info.

I beg to differ. http://youtu.be/beTy6j8uHp4
