A few of us have searched all over trying to find out how to switch species without having to leave the game entirely, but have not been able to find out how. I swear I remember doing so when playing the original years ago. Did I remember incorrectly, or are we just missing something?

You can't. It was never a feature in the game. The only time you can switch species is automatically while playing Alien/Predator Tag and Last Man Standing.
