Hi all

So I have the original Aliens Vs Predator and Aliens Vs Predator Gold and while I can install both games and while the menus and everything load up ok and the sound and music all work ok as soon as I try to actually start playing the graphics are all messed up here is what I see

https://i.ibb.co/q1cgKpB/screen-shot-1.png
https://i.ibb.co/Km9W1Dc/screen-shot-2.png

I tried setting compatibility mode to win 98 but this doesn’t seem to work, anyone know how to fix this?

Looking in the game directory I noticed a file called dx_error.log which contains the following

So it seems like this might be a Direct X problem clearly Aliens versus Predator and Direct X 9.0c don’t get along which is strange because I can run other games that use Direct X 6 without a problem like Warzone 2100 for example so in theory Aliens versus Predator should work just fine.

Question is why doesn’t it, what’s wrong and how do I fix it.

The other issue that I ran in to was the sound bug where if upon loading the game you try to skip past the intro the sound just goes into a continuous loop but it turns out this is easy to fix

Just go in to the game directory default: C:\Program Files\Fox\Aliens versus Predator

Change the name of the games executable from AvP.exe to Aliens vs Predator.exe

This works for the gold version as well

What actually causes this glitch I’m not sure but from what understand from researching the issue it seems that windows contains another file also called AvP.exe and apparently the two files conflict, so renaming the games executable resolves the conflict and fixes the problem.

It could be the game requires some legacy DX runtime libraries. It sounds similar to problems I have with Arkham Asylum. This may help:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

Whenever I set up a new Windows PC I always add these (since the Arkham problem) and never had a complaint about older games.

sadly that doesn't seem to make a difference as i already have the directx_Jun2010_redist.exe installed.

after a bit of searching i did come across this

http://homepage.eircom.net/~duncandsl/avp

which seemed to help so it seems like i was right about it being a Direct X issue.
