Note that this is for The Nations (aka Alien Nations II).
Players might be interested that instead of going to the site mentioned in game that doesn't work anymore, the map editor can be downloaded at http://thenations.jowood.de/Sites/download.htm
However, I can't seem to get it to run since it says an outdated version of The Nations is installed on my PC.
So I unpacked the editor by 7Zip. I extracted everything from the EXE file into the subfolder "Editor" (tried in the main directory, too, but same issues would arise, can always copy it again to there if necessary). The background.tga was put into a subfolder "resource" by me, so I can use the graphics editor now.
However, the map editor doesn't work. Now I'd have to set up the "path.missions" since it is not found by the editor.exe in the configuration. It says I should reinstall the program which is impossible due to the reasons stated above. Ok, to set this up I ran the regedit tool and went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> JoWooD -> DV2Editor and edited the registry entries there. However, still a message appears that says the configuration (paths) can not be properly read.
Ok, here's the workaround: Export the Path DV2Addons (from HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> JoWooD) from the Registry and edit the file to change DV2Addons to DV2Editor and import it again. Now the editor will load but crashes when it has finished loading.
Maybe someone can tell us how to get the editor to work? I will give up now, tried running it from a separate folder and from the game folder, with the original and the editor's language.ca file, always it crashes after loading but at least the editor.exe starts.
(Also, does anyone know where to download user maps?)

This question / problem has been solved by Paczykimage
Sorry for the slight delay. The working GOG's version of this Editor is now available.
It can be downloaded from The Nations bonus content page.
Annoyingly, using the map editor from GOG still has that same "Can't find path.missions" error...
Any way to actually get it to work? :(
Start regedit.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> JoWooD -> DV2Editor
Set path.missions to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\missions
(or wherever you have installed the game)
Did you install the editor or only unzip it? Try to double-click on the exe file you downloaded from gog.com - do NOT use the editor from the JoWooD homepage instead.
By the way, I have some strange 3D issue on 800x600 pixel. If that appears, you must change the values video.height and video.width to (hexadecimal) video.height 300 and video.width 400 - that's 1024x768 pixel and stopped that issue for me.

Well, that kinda works ^^
I've installed the editor, after un-zipping it to the desktop. I moved it into The Nations Gold game folder, then changed the registry as you said. Instead of moaning about the missions, or maps being in the wrong place, it now just says
"Cannot read game data!"
And i can't get any further than that :/
Here's what your editor folder should look like (in German since I'm from Germany). Note that the editor is in the subfolder "Editor", not in the main directory of The Nations Gold. So please move it back. I can't attach the full text file (including all files in TNG folder) but if you want I can post it.

All my filers/folders are in the right place.
My registry is edited, to show the game where to look for missions and maps.
I'm still getting the "Can't open game data!" error though >_<

Hey
As usual, we need to get more information to solve your problem :)
Please contact our support team and provide them with necessary information like, DXDiag and describe your problem as detailed as possible.
Best

Hey guys I think I found the solution

Open Regedit Then click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER
locate and click on JoWooD Then click on the
directory named dv2editor and set the maps path
to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\maps or where ever you installed
it, Then set the missions path to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\missions,
Now Change to the sub-directory "Paths" and set Path0 to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\dv2.ca

Now for those of you who moved the installation of the editor here's some paths
that you might have to change, Okay for instance let's say that you moved the editor
to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\Editor you have to go to
Regedit HKEY_CURRENT_USER JoWood dv2editor and change the install path to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\Editor
then go to the sub-directory "Paths" and change path1 to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\Editor\dv2editor.ca
and path2 to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\Editor\language.ca

PS: if you don't know how to run regedit in windows xp just open up the start menu and look for run and then just type in regedit.
I hate resurrecting such old posts but better than writing a new one since I have the same issue.

I've changed all the paths in regedit, but now the editor starts to load, it gets to the image of the stork holding the disk, the progress bar goes to the end and then it crashes and tells me to submit the crash.log to the Jowood Hotline.

Below is the contents of the crash.log file

Anybody know how to get this darn editor actually functioning properly. I'm running on Windows 7 64bit, and the game was bought from GOG.

Thanks

I have the same Problem. My System is Windows 10 Pro 64bit and I also do run the Game by GOG.com

What I did was going in regedit BUT instead of following blind the former post from Super_Gamer1231 was this:

First of all, I've putted all the Data from C: into my HDD ( D: ) and let all the files overwritten which I've got from the Editor. Then I've putted the dv2.ca, dv2editor.ca as well the language.ca data file into my "The Nations" folder direct. I've put the Editor.exe there where the game.exe data is.

path.install D:\The Nations Gold\bin
path.maps D:\The Nations Gold\maps
path.missions D:\The Nations Gold\missions

Paths
Path0 D:\The Nations Gold\dv2.ca
Path1 D:\The Nations Gold\dv2editor.ca
Path2 D:\The Nations Gold\language.ca

That started the Editor, but all what I've got was a Black Screen with the blue loading symbol from Win10. I've attached the Black Screen so you can see the Result

I did not solved the Problem, but at least I've got no Error Message!

The above works... with one last step.
Run the editor in compatibility mode (I used XP -SP3)
It takes about a min or so to start up... but it WILL start.
To make this simpler for others:, here's a .reg file that has all the proper values;
Run the editor install from GoG then move the install (in 'C:/editor'), to '<game intsall path>/Editor'.
Then copy this .reg file in the text editor of your choice, and do a search & replace, to sub
your install director, for the one I used.

Run this reg, and set the comparability of 'editor. exe', to 'XP-SP3'...
and it'll run (tho it takes about a min, to start up.).

Here's the reg file contents:
===========
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JoWooD\dv2editor]
"video.flags"=dword:00000007
"video.device"=hex:
"video.height"=dword:00000258
"lang"="en"
"path.missions"="N:\\Program Files\\GoG\\Nations\\The Nations Gold\\missions"
"video.refresh"=dword:00000000
"ProductCode"="{C81EAAB9-BA68-45DD-A35F-3FB326D41BC3}"
"path.crashlog"="\\crash.log"
"video.bpp"=dword:00000010
"path.invalidlog"=""
"Version"="1.0.0"
"path.install"="N:\\Program Files\\GoG\\Nations\\The Nations Gold\\Editor"
"video.width"=dword:00000320
"path.maps"="N:\\Program Files\\GoG\\Nations\\The Nations Gold\\maps"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JoWooD\dv2editor\Paths]
"Path0"="N:\\Program Files\\GoG\\Nations\\The Nations Gold\\dv2.ca"
"Path1"="N:\\Program Files\\GoG\\Nations\\The Nations Gold\\Editor\\dv2editor.ca"
"Path2"="N:\\Program Files\\GoG\\Nations\\The Nations Gold\\Editor\\language.ca"
===============
After trying everything from peoples' instruction this is what works for me:
Do not move Editor folder anywhere! Should be in C:\
Regedit
THKEY_CURRENT_USER
JoWooD
dv2editor
set the maps path to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\maps
set the missions path to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\missions,
change to the sub-directory "Paths" and set Path0 to C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\dv2.ca
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\Editor you have to go to
Regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
JoWood
dv2editor
set the install path to C:\Editor
go to the sub-directory "Paths"
change path1 to C:\Editor\dv2editor.ca
set path2 to C:\Editor\language.ca
Now you can run the editor.

If youre done with the map, the .ca file is set in
C:\Users\<NameOfTheUser>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\maps
you have to cut this .ca file to:
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold\maps

Enjoy!! Let me know if works.
Does anybody play The Nations in 2020?
