in the missin the first contact for the amazons, you have to sell some cakes and buy some juice. i have set the markets up to buy and sell said products, and i have created trade routes with the merchants. surely after several hours they would have fulfilled this objective but the mission never ends. is there a bug or am i doing something wrong? or is there some other requirement that i am missing?

It's a well known problem. Technically it's not a bug but a stupid AI design - he barely produce any juice so is not willing to trade any because, well, he doesn't have anything because the limited quantity that he produced is used immediately. I've left the computer on over night and when I returned in the morning I got a winning message. But frankly, I think it's not worth it. Use cheats instead. After all you did everything properly it's not your fault that the game is poorly designed.
