I played this game a long time ago and remember it being a bit different. There was a funny plot for each campaign with lengthy texts being read by your mentor, four mentors to choose from, there was fishing and navy and the main menu had a tropical theme to it instead of a forest.

Is this another version or maybe it has an add-on or something? This one really feels like a lesser version to me.

Yes, the version you are speaking of had Mission Pack add-on. http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/alien-nations-mission-pack
It is not included in gog version (probably because of licensing issues) and it doesn't seems like it will be included in the future.
