Hey guys!
I sent this in as a help ticket but thought I'd post it here to see if any of you may be able to help me with the problem I'm facing.
I'm already a proud owner of this game and had problems trying to play it on my Vista installed computer so I gave up on it awhile back. When I saw Alien Nations available on GOG (and for Vista) I bought and downloaded it from the website and it worked perfectly!
Now that That Nations is out, I went and immediately bought the game hoping that I will finally be able to run it on my machine. Unfortunately, I'm experiencing the same type of lag problem when in game. No problems on installation, intro works fine, but when selecting single player and any of the campaigns including the tutorial, the game starts to lag. It's as though the FPS (?) is really slow. The sound sort of echos throughout as well. I've tried using the Troubleshooting Tool to configure the lowest settings, tried a couple of variations but it still doesn't work.
The funny thing about it tho, is the minute I decide to change the resolution in game it works okay, but then the lag slowly creeps up. I change the resolution to something else again, it works the same; it'll be fine at the start then it'll lag out eventually. This is in a span of say maybe 3 to 5 minutes from the start of change by the way.
I've read the support articles and did the necessary changes for my Vista machine but alas it's still not working. If there's a way, I'd really appreciate a feedback on how to fix this problem. Not sure if it's a game or a machine thing, but any help would be great.
I love this RTS game to bits and pieces!
:D

Hi Paczyk,
I did send a ticket (including my DxDiag file) to tech support on the 14th and am awaiting reply. Thought I'd post this on here as well to see if anyone else has had the same problem or could give an input or two. :)
Hello!
At last (not so funny though...) someone has the same problem I have. I've reported it, but my english is poor and I cannot described it better but using word "glitches" instead of "lag". The rest is the same: The Nations slows down... even on Vista. I paste what I've send to GOG Team:
I'm using Windows 7 (I know, I know - It's still not complete) but when I used Vista Home Premium I had the same problem.
I have uninstalled antivirus (Norton 2010 pre release) and other software that may slows my notebook down. I have the newest drivers.
So, The Nations is one of my favorite strategy game ever, but since I'm not using Windows XP anymore I cannot play this game since newest OS doesn't support it. :/ I have original copy and I cannot play! (sic!) You make old games runs on XP/Vista (if Windows Vista, then Windows 7 as well) - great idea by the way - so I observe gog.com and waiting... At last! You made it and I bought it even though I live in Poland and had some trouble to pay for it.
When I installed game (no problem with that), I run it. Intro (no problems), menu (nice job, higher resolution), custom game, begin... and there's old problem. Game glitches and runs very slow, sound glitches. "Maybe I got some software in tray or something..." - I thought. None. CPU and memory is fine.
I don't know what to do. :( Please help. I can provide You any information and even send a movie clip if You wish...

I'm having the same problem with the game. I checked my driver - latest version, ffdshow - turned off for Nations, intro video works fine... but the game itself lags (changing the resolution doesn't work for me though) and the sound is staticky and skipping. Hopefully there's a solution soon.
Support did get back to me and suggested some other things for me to try (based on the DxDiag file I sent in) but to no avail, it's still doing what it does. What a shame! :(

Yep! I still does... In reply from GOG Team, they claims we all have the same problem - unusual graphic card (nVidia 7300, nVidia 7300GS and nVidia 7400Go) and for now they could not recreate problem because of lack of hardware (with that graphic card).
I'm a little bit disappointed though... Maybe it's true that my graphic card is uncommon but hey!, it runs almost every game (not the newest o,O) without problems till now. The game witch I want to run the most... Ech, too bad. :( I don't know why it causes the problems. I will try the solution they suggested but I doubt it helps...
I'll be waiting, maybe something change. :)
Oh well that's tough. I didn't even know it was a graphic card problem. Care to share the solution suggestions? :) Maybe there's something new I could try.
Sure! That's the whole message:
Hello,
I apologize for not being able to reply sooner. I'm afraid we don't have the exact same type of notebook as you have, with which we could recreate the problem, So far the problem was reported by three users, whose computers share one similarity, namely graphics card types:
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS,
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS,
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400.
These are integrated cards by NVidia, in your case a mobile version. Unfortunately our testbed PCs don't have these cards, as they're very rarely used by gamers. It will take a while for us to procure a motherboard with this type of card, unfortunately.
Could you try installing older drivers for your card, perhaps? Also, you could try running the game through an application called 3D Analyzer - it emulates a graphics card through the CPU, which should let you bypass any inherent problem with your graphics card which might interfere with the game.
Regards,
Peter

I waited a long time since reporting a problem to You. It almost a year and there's no solution for our problem! Are You even care of us, gamers? What should I do to play the game I've payed for? And You didn't warn others that they might encounter a problem if they have a nVidia mobile graphic card series in proper section called: "Game support". What are You going to do now? Tell us we must wait another (almost) year?
I know this is an old topic, but I'm just posting to say that I'm experiencing these same problems with the GeForce Go 7300 graphics card in my laptop. Picked this game up on a whim as part of the holiday special, but am now wishing I'd picked something else as it's totally unplayable.

It's a pity that we can't get a refund or an account credit on games with known and unresolved issues like this. In future I will be checking out the specific game forums before making any purchases!

Anyway, it's worth bearing this topic in mind if you're considering purchasing this game to play on a machine with any of the graphics cards mentioned in this topic. I know that it's cheap, but that doesn't mean we should be willing to accept a broken product.
Yea, I do think they should warn people before they make the purchase! I am unable to play the game I have purchased and the Gog team just ignores anyone who are stuck with this unplayable game now.
Gog.com simply don't care for their customers. I have send e-mails over year ago and asked for solving the problem. They trying to make me use emulator (!) to play that game. This is unthinkable!

On top of that, I noticed that they clean up my mailbox (I think it is new web issue) so i can't publish all mails on forum and show how gog.com treat us. I asked them to put information that this game is not playable on some graphic cards but they didn't do anything about that.

Yeah, right. I provide them DXDiag file from PC (not laptop) with nVidia GeForce 9600GT (I think it is quite popular video graphic card for gamers), where the same problem appeared and they had over a year to get the motherboard with that graphic. Still nothing happens...

Don't bother - "they" can't hear us. I have the same problem (even on 9600GT) and tried provide all necessarily information (DXDiag file) they asking me, sends e-mails etc. and guess what... It's THREE years since then and I see no point further asking GOG Team for solving that problem. They don't even put warning that on some known graphic models (7400 Go, 9600GT, GTS 450) The Nation is not playable. Too bad - The Nation is still the best economy strategy I ever played and even if I pay twice for it, I can't play. :/
