...are the rocks and debris. Every time I try to play this game, I inevitably wander between some rocks and get myself trapped in an area I can't get back out of. I fear suspicious looking terrain like the plague, but after running around shooting aliens like a madman, I get trapped yet again.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Yup, that's pretty common for me too.
Quite a bummer if you want to explore the environment.

Unless there is a way to get out of these places that we don't know about ?

Man I just had a great run - and got stuck in stores tower level !!! This is insane how many places are there, where You can get stuck! DAMN IT! :(:(:(
