Hi,

I don't really mind the checkpoints and inability to save where you want (the only problem I see that could happen is that it could save your game when you are very low on ammo and items, and you can't reload a previous save where you were in a better situation), but is there only one save slot ?! I wanted to show the beginning of the game to my sister, so I chose "New Game", but after that when I wanted to reload my game near the end of Episode 2 (I think it was the end, because I had found most manuscript pages in the episode), there was only one save... Why is it labelled "1: Hard drive" then ? Is my progress lost and I have to start over from the beginning of Episode 2 ?

First: Indeed there is a chance the game will automatically save when you're out of ammo. It happened to my buddy who had to restart the whole chapter because of this. ;P

But yeah, it seems that the game, at least by default, maintains only one slot for checkpoints. The interface suggests that there can be more slots, but I'm afraid that this may be a left-over from other versions such as the Steamworks or console version. So for the GOG version it seems you will have to manually create a backup.
I had this problem as well. In fact, I had to stop playing altogether because I ended up with a saved spot with only 3 bullets and a bunch of enemies, so my progress was effectively halted.

I really really hate checkpoint type systems. There also doesn't appear to be any dev console or any way to enter codes to add ammo, so I have no path to progress.

Oh well, it was a promising game, too bad it was defeated by its own mechanics.

Edit: Funny - I'm listed as 'New User' then it shows 'Registered: Sep 2008' New!

You can activate dev mode with the -developermenu command line option. It adds a menu option in-game that give you full ammo, flashlight, unlock episodes, and another thing I've forgotten. It's kinda fun to go through again just spewing flashbangs everywhere. :D

oho! You may have just saved the day!

Thanks a ton!
You usually don't need ammo, I got stuck one time between two checkpoints with no ammo, and all I had to do was avoid taking damage while getting to the next checkpoint/light, which would of been a lot easier if it hadn't been a generator you had to time mouse presses with while trying to avoid being attacked.
If you try to shoot every "Taken" in the game on the Nightmare difficulty, you'll run out of ammo every time. On that difficulty level, you just need to dodge, avoid damage, and get to the next light source. Therefore, on the lower difficulty levels, this method still works. Don't get discouraged...the game is too good for this to be a real issue.

You know, worst case scenario: you have to start from the beginning of the current chapter. It's not like you have to start all over.
