I want to make a map, one intended for multiplayer, probably aow2 maybe aow1.

The things that occur to me as requiring consideration are;

-early invasion with lowlevel troops should be possible, but investing into higher level troops should also be possible

-there should be chokepoints, but there should also be open areas and alternate routes

-there should be some recruitment sites with unique troops, but not so much that they overwhelm the whole point of investing into cities and training t3s/t4s.

-There should be some sort of Escher-style moebius-strip teleport network somewhere. I don't know quite what I mean by this, but I'm sure it would be cool

-There should be valuable holdings in the middle of the map, but also some great cities to be captured recessed somewhere deep in the edges.

-What if one level had cities, another had limited/small cities and mines, another had recruitment sites and mana? and these three levels were largely self-contained with exits that are heavily guarded?

Anyway, I want to make a map but I don't quite have a concrete idea about it, anyone got suggestions?

Open up the collection of 1v1 maps from the last couple of map making contests (over at Heaven Games) and review those maps. I loved how each of them was balanced, gave time for empire growth (on a small scale), and usually didn't rely on some "trick" to gain an advantage over your opponent.

They are not >2 multiplayer, but they are also small maps. The ideas shown should lend themselves to four players on a Medium map and six or eight players on a large map. I understand your desire to be creative, but it's always good to build upon the ideas of others. :)
One of the things to watch for is how much time it takes to accomplish things. I feel like Time is the third primary resource (alongside Gold and Mana), which is where productive races (ex. Orcs, Dwarves) get their racial bonus.

Like RTS games, a level 1 troop rush is going to overrun someone that tries to tech, unless there are factors to help the tech-er defend against it.
