Had a look around online, but couldn't see much related to this issue

The game loads fine, shows the menu, but when I click an option, it will show the map screen for a second, then crash to desktop with no messages. I'm using XP with the service packs

Tried tinkering with options, as well as installing the unofficial patch, but no difference either way. Anyone else have this problem or doe anyone have any suggestions? I only have this in the series so don't know if it's the same for the other 2 games
Sorted it!

edit:

Inspired by my efforts getting System shock 2 running on my PC, I tried disabling one of my CPUs on the process via the task manager, which worked!

Huzzah!

Hey DF,

I'm having the exact same problem you described. Could you please tell me in greater detail how you fixed it?

Thank you.
1) Run the game
2) On the main menu, use Control+alt+delete to bring up the task manager
3) select the processes tab
4) find the process for the game
5) right click and 'set affinity'
6) Disable the second CPY listed (if more than one)

that should do it, but you have to do it every time which isn't ideal, anyone got a better solution?
Hey all, one nice little freeware item I found for older games running on newer multi-core computers is Launch n Set. It can be found, and dlld here: http://www.brothersoft.com/launch-n-set-141709.html

It worked like a charm for me with my XP computer and dual core AMD processor which was crashing the game frequently, especially each time I would enter a battle screen. This simple utility basically allows you to just launch the game from it, and already has the presets for using just one of your processor cores (You set it to one core after dropping the game's exe. file into the target line of the utility on your desktop). Once you have the game saved to the Launch and Set Utility, you just launch it from there, and it basically saves you the steps of having to bring up the task manager everytime, and do it manually. Made the game go from basically unplayable for me, to working great :). Hope this helps some peeps. Happy Gaming!
If you want a more permanent solution without any kind of fiddling afterwards you could try an old little tool called "imageCFG". It changes the exe file somehow so that it uses only the CPU(s) you want it to. You can can find the tool and instructions on this site: http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/hyperthreading/
It's about the Thief games but I tried it with many other games over the years and it worked with most. I also tested it succesfully with AOW2.
