Hi there!

I used the opportunity and grabbed Age of Wonders: Planetfall, since it really sounded nice. Reminded me of a mix of good ole "King's Bounty" (MS-DOS Version), Heroes of Might and Magic and Masters of Magic (Am I right here?)

I downloaded, installed, started the tutorial and.. Ummm... Felt lost. Now you do this, now do that... No real background of how and why and when. After the tutorial I started a scenario (as recommended when coming from the tutorial) and just felt lost on the map.
I had more a feeling of aimlessly wandering about than planning and doing and some connections of how to expands were mere trial and error. I felt a little lost. Combat is fine and hunting ruins for ressources really is like said games, but base building and expansion seems under-explained. I also read a review that said just that: it is hard to get into what to do and how to do it (besides combat). It's nothing like Stellaris which I fired up and felt right at home, with mouseover help and an extensive beginner's guide in the paradox wiki.

Is there anything like that? Or even some place where the mechanics of base building and expansion are explained a little more? I feel I will like this game, just like Stellaris but without proper tutorial or manual it is rather hard to feel like going for a goal.

It can be a bit daunting until the penny drops. A lot of information is available in tooltips, and the campaigns are basically a tutorial.

You should find the link below helpful, giving numerous tippy videos that should help. Good luck.

Thanks. This seems to be pretty much what I have been looking for.

Most of the machanics are know to me due to mentioned games. The overland map seems a bit confusing and the "why" of some mechanics are not well explained in the tutorial, just the "what" like "Now you annex the sector to expand".

PS: First impression is melee is at a disadvantage? Tried a scenario with Assembly and they start with mostly foot soldiers and get hit on their way to the front (both ways, waiting then approaching, or proactively approaching the enemy)
not really. you just have to play a bit diffrent is all. melele ignore shields so they tend to hurt. only real trick is closing the distance.
