I'm new to the AoW series but I'm not new to the TBS games (I've played from Civ 2 to Civ 5). I'm using a Mac with CXG and I'm looking for a fix to play scenarios but right now I can play the tutorial and the campaign.
Problem: Can't break out of a turtle or rush into chokepoints.
If I try turtle and take it slow I will drown myself, can't get out of my stone wall city and my gold goes to negative. No matter how many raids I stop (at least 10 raids in one game) the enemy keeps coming at me. Can't rush to grab all the cities and farms near by because those stupid halflings eat my gold just to come with me and if I don't pay them they will lose anyway (smart halflings). I have considered attacking them to conquer their city but I don't want to lose my status with them.
I have tried this campaign over 20 times now, and I just can't do it. Turtle just helps the enemy to mass up (I play SC2 and that's the main reason I hate turtles). Dividing my forces rushing to grab everything helps the enemy pick my units one by one and then my cities and those 100+ gold I payed per city lost. And I have heard that the evil campaign is harder.
I can't play scenarios for now to get a better feel to the game (even though most tactic battles I do pretty good). Is there something I'm missing from this game? I have read the manual, played the tutorial twice and used my spells all the time. Is there a way to beat the enemy when you start with no gold and 16 units, including your hero, when the enemy looks to have 20+ units and creating more.
