I just got sm from gog and I am playing the hafling tutorial.
Just wondering how and where to recruit heroes?
I am researching a spell to call heroes but I'm sure there's another way to get them.
Thanks for any help.
Usually heroes will come knocking at your door offering their services, if you have the money to recruit them. I'm not usre about the excact mechanisms though; if it's random or not.
Sometimes they can be recruited from recruitment sites.
Sometimes they can be liberated from prisons.
Sometimes you can resurrect heroes you have killed.
Sometimes you can Call Heroes, if there actually are any heroes around to call.
Sometimes heroes are scripted to join you.

Depends on what you're playing: campaign, random maps and mods have different rules. The standard campaigns have some limitations regarding the number of new heroes you can recruit on each map, and the amount of experience they can earn.

Random maps do not have such restrictions and you'll tipically get a recruitement message in the first few turns, more heroes will then offer to join you periodically (until you have 4) and some will be up for hire in taverns or waiting to be rescued in dungeons.

Apart from that IIRC heroes are also susceptible to mind control, and can be resurrected too but only once, if they die again they are lost forever.
Thanks for the responses,I did have one hero I think I got him from a tavern but i got him killed,I guess i'll figure it out as I get more into the campaign. But right now there seems to be none to recruit.
Try using Call Heroes. If it doesn't work, that means no more heroes are available for standard recruitment in that map (by standard recruitment I mean them knocking at your door; there may be some hidden in taverns\dungeons, but then it's up to you to find them).
Yup, taverns are a good place for them.

When I play, I always leave enough cash to buy a new hero in the early game. One tends to wander by, and they're too powerful an asset to miss out on.
