Age of Wonders - Shadow Magic played o.k on win7 on mothers laptop which was a home edition of Win7, I recently upgraded to Win7 Professional on my PC and after installing it the game goes to start but then doesn't and does nothing. Can anyone help me?
There are a couple of things you can try here.
I'm sure you've already tried some of these but I'll list them anyway.

Run the setup, change one of the options below and try the game again.
Disable Direct 3D.
Make the video mode = Window.
Disable the intro.

If non of those work have a look in your windows system info.
(Start > Right Click on Computer > Properties).

If it's saying something like 4 GB (3.8 usable) it often means your video card can be stealing some system ram. I've seen this really screw around with games before, I had it when I upgraded to Windows 7 with Lord of the Rings Online.

The solution was to go into my BIOS and turn on a setting called "Bios Memory Remap Feature". If you turn this on and reboot you'll probably find Windows reports you have 4GB of ram and the message "3.8 usable" will disappear.

On my ASUS P5B that setting is found under 1. chipset, 2. northbridge, 3. enable "memory remap feature". That can also fix this issue.

Thanks Dave, there are some really good tips there... my teacher did say that Win7 may not be leaving enough memory to deal with any game, as indeed I do not seem to be able to get any game to run on my computer now after upgrading to Win7. I have been under the impression since that I may have no choice but to upgrade my Ram... well I guess I can afford it now, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that as the little money I have left I was hoping to save up for a car. I guess I was up for a new graphics card anyway... but I will try having a look around for the options you have listed until then. Thanks again! ^_^
I would suggest to have at an absolute minimum of 2GB of RAM these days, ideally 4 or more.
Saying that though you can run Windows 7 with 1GB and get Aow to run okay.

If you need a ram upgrade I suggest these people; http://www.crucial.com/
They have an app which can look at your motherboard and work out which ram chips are compatible with your system.

As for video cards I would suggest Nvidia 8800 GTX or higher =)
