I just finished the EL-Campaign and i am curios what you think about the Necromacer Class and the Undead.

Necromamcer
As far as it counts for me...i found the Necromacer a bit crazy^^...the class has some nice spells and can be really strong at the long term but with his abilites he felt more like some kind of shadowblade then a mighty Spellcaster that rules overs the dead...it's hard to describe but for me...it missed the right "feeling" :)
Aside from this...i had a big Problem with 12-Slot limit...4 basics+Heal/Heal Undead/Eat Corpse/Raise Cropse/...and very fast the slots where gone i didn't found a way to use the "surplus"-Abilities

The Undead
Well...not THE UNDEAD(Vampires, liches as leaders and the mindless hordes of zombies&Skelis :) but mostly the standard Elf/Ork/...that don't reg anymore and traded Blight+Frostress for Fire/Holyweakness...i hoped raised dead or ghuls would be a "adon" to the undead ranks instead of the coredesign but i was wrong. The Banshee gave some "Undead" taste and maybe the Deadbringer...otherwise...Elfes/Orks...that don't reg anymore ;)

Aside from the "feeling" i think the Undead need some balancing changes, esp. for morale because i noticed that for Units most negative morale effects still work but you miss most positive effects...citys are plain neutral...so you miss the boni from high morale, including those nice events and get that minor Undeadboon.
The upside is...you don't have to pay attention where you fight&settle and you spare the crystals for terraforming...but esp. with the Necromancer it doesn't take long until you have more crystals then you need.

Cutting a long speech short...i didn't feel like playing THE UNDEAD :) and i think the design could use some balancing changes...still fun overall...just..medircore AOW3 instead of THE UNDEAD and the NECROMANCER..the Ruler of Death

The icon-limit is annoying, and affects the necromancer more than most. I made sure in the last scenario of the campaign to re-build my hero with fewer than 12 abilities.
However, note that it's just a display quirk. You can still use the extra abilities by going to the character's description screen and selecting it there.

Anyway, playing the necromancer felt cool to me. Especially once you really figure out how to get Ghoul Touch, Necromantic Aura, Animate Dead and Control Undead working it really did feel like I was playing a mighty lord of the dead. In the third campaign scenario in particular, where you fight tons of undead, I was just seizing control of entire enemy armies, making them serve my character and amassing a giant horde of Ghouls to overrun my enemies. This does require a specific playstyle, though.

(On the downside, this utterly broke my economy. Upkeep's a pain.)

I liked the look of the Ghouled units fine in close-up, when you can see their rotted skin and whatnot... but you don't play the game close-up. So yeah, I agree that the feel of commanding the Undead was missing a bit. Even some graphical effects like the Goblins get with their stench-cloud would have helped.

Gameplay-wise I really like the ghouling mechanics, but graphics wise something was missing. However, the Bone Collector looks awesome.

Undead don't have negative morale effects. The only exception I can think of is units "dedicated to ALIGNMENT" if you have a non-corresponding alignment. But otherwise, they're always neutral. Or rather, always at positive morale if you research Master of Puppets.

It's true that the lack of morale boni ends up being a penalty, especially when it comes to economy, but that's a fair price to pay for the ability to grow your army through doing battle. Not to mention growing cities rapidly through Undead Plague, or being able to raze and burn your way through enemy terrain with Hasty Plunder and then instantly animating the cities you burn down with Animate Ruins... lots of options.

All in all I liked the expansion a great deal and loved the campaign. But I do wish the ghouled units looked more like undead, especially when zoomed out.
Morale
Maybe it was a Bug, just tested it again....my Undead suffer negative morale from everything that isn't caused by a spell/Ability that can't target them...so..burning, bad luck,etc....all caused negative morale...if even seen a Unit being poisened.

You're right. They do suffer morale penalties from immolation. Never noticed, since immolation is pretty rare. Huh.

Might be a bug. I think the devs made the undead immune to just about all specific morale-effects rather than giving them a blanket immunity, so some might be missed. Likewise, they're mostly poison immune, but high-elves with their inherent poison weakness can be affected anyway.
Undead do not suffer from most morale affecting things. Mostly those that are related to terrain and fear. They are subjected to morale modifiers of combat state effects, not being upkeeped and Alignment modifiers.

The Necromancer himself is not undead, unless you research Harbingers of Death.
The vampires are the "Bringers of Death", Your Leader and Heroes become Liches after you research HoD, the zombies are the ghouls and the skelies are the bone collectors and the cadavers. You also have the Banshees, the Lost souls and the Dread Reapers. Pretty much THE UNDEAD, in my book.

For me, it must have been the most faithful undead force I have played to date. Some things are not quite as it would feel right but there are some practical issues concerning game mechanics and balance that, understandably, do not allow for making things be as "right" as one would wish.

The necromancer is powerful in all stages of the game. Some think they are weak initially but, in my opinion, those people forget to utilize cadavers to a good potential. Animate ruins is, also, a great spell for an Evil Necro. Combine with Destruction specialization to raze instantly receiving loot gold and animate the city getting the best off all options!

Banshees are Shadow Stalker killers, amongst other things, with the significant amount of spirit damage they deliver(although I read that they are giving the Dread Reaper some spirit damage next patch). Their usability never ceases. Their special ability makes units vulnarable to the Finger of Death, among other things. All living armies tremble in the sight of a Banshee on the battlefield!

Lost souls have great synergy with Banshees and have undying, making them excellent harassment units.

Dread reapers are as expected, although they are, currently, quite weak against undead units.

Reanimators and Cadavers, in conjunction with "Healers of the Dead" are a force to be reckoned with. The best horde force in the universe!

Bone collectors. You can play without them but you can make them the tip of your spear! With the ability to increase in power(damage) and durability(hit points) as well as heal with each corpse(or cadaver) that eats and the fact that they can eat and move on the same turn(for more than once) they have the potential of becoming the most powerful unit on the battlefield!

Bringers of Death are the ones that feed your force with new recruits by cursing your fallen enemies. With shadow step along with good damage and durability(and life stealing), it is one of the best mid-to-late game unit for the Necro.

Age of Death...Enough said. Strike anywhere, with forces at no cost, behind enemy lines or on your own fronts. Everyone is fearful of fighting battles when this spell is in effect, as they will have to have enough troops remaining to defeat your forces that may rise and, then, make sure they do not lose troops for they may rise as well!

The Necromancer himself is the most powerful hero to date, in my opinion, capable of raising his own armies, recruiting living units as undead ghouls and recruiting undead units(command undead, commanding-or what the actual name- aura), along with the ability to raise the dead as cadavers(If not a Necromancer Leader, though, you will have to recruit some reanimators from the undead circles to keep a decent cadaver force), it has a great synergy with a Sorcerer(and with all classes, really, but I played a Sorcerer with a Necro hero and the extra armies are great! Having an undead force to support your armies in battle is great!).

This is my take on the Necro. Powerful but not too powerful, in my opinion. A very nice balancing of a class right out of the box for Triumph. A damn good job in my opinion.
