This is frustrating. Both AoW 2 and SM will not load when I try to start them up. I have not loaded the original yet.

AoW 2 does nothing, and SM shows a splash screen and them a second of sound and back to the desktop only.

GOG needs to make sure their games work before they sell them.

This is like the 3 or 4 games that are unplayable from GOG for me personally.

I hope they address this issue, but after Gorky 17 was forgotten about I am not expecting much.

Live and learn.
Do you have Vista? Do the games shut down or get minimised?

I am running XP, and nothing is minimized, they just will not start at all.
Well, I have tried all I know.

I just downloaded and installed AoW2 and works perfectly for me on XPSP3.
XP SP3 here, all AoW games AND Gorky 17 work perfectly for me. Something is up with your PC, not the games.

Have you tried changing stuff in the Config program? I recommend you disable the intro if you haven't tried that already. Many old games use strange formats for their intro.
I have tried disabling various options int he setup, and then disabling virtually all options in the setup and noting works.

I have XP SP3, 4 gigs RAM, Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum, and Nividia 9600 GT, DirectX 9.0c

katakis, I am clearly not the only one having issues with this game or Gorky 17. Just read the forums and you will see, Gorky is on gog's end, and I have to think where others are having issue this too is partly on gog's end as well.

I have given up hope of gog fixing anything once it is released, as they honestly have a poor track record.

I will likely buy BG2 and then be done with most games here.

I really dislike spending money and getting nothing for it time and again.

Have you tried adding the game .EXEs to the Data Execution Prevention exclusion list ?

You could also check the game settings in Nvidia control panel and disable Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering (if enabled).

Do you happen to use 3rd party software which affects the vga or sound driver? For example, some games don't even start when ATI Tray Tools is running in the background. Also the same happens when I try to run Left4Dead 2 with Mumble.

So I suggest you quit everything before trying to run these games (any chat/telephony program, etc).

gyokzoli, thanks for the tip, but no I do not run anything that is not required on my system. I try to keep it lean as possible so it will run fast as possible.

Last try... you could install older vga and/or audio drivers.
AoW2 takes awhile to load, check your processes for it, if it's running, wait a bit and it will run in aprox 2 min.
Just bought the game and had the same issue. I turned off the Direct 3D enable feature and turned down the resolution to get the game going.

I then ran into an issue of the game just ending as you play. Maybe 5 minutes in or so. Found another post of a user who physically set the affinity of multicore processors to single core. Did that and the game played for a good half hour before I quit for the night.

I seem to remember having to do this with another game I used to play as old software had trouble with dual core processors. Name of the game eludes me...

was there DEP back in XP too? If so, it's worth a check. All games that refused to work for me did so because I had been foolish enough to enable DEP.
