Hey all,

So, I'm trying to run AOW 1 on my computer, but whenever I pull it up, the screen flickers black, and then the game minimizes so I'm back to my desktop. In the meanwhile, the audio for the opening cinematic strarts (though it often skips or loops). And when it's over, if I can pull up the home menu, it's got a split screen copy and has the colors all distorted. If I try to interact with the options, direct X "installs" something that doesn't help and I have to shut down my computer to get out of it. Any ideas?

Windows?

Alt-Enter to window the screen, and then Alt-Enter again to full-screen. The weird colours should go away.

Thereunto: Windows?

Yeah, Windows 10. Sorry. And I just tried to pull the game up to try that, and there was just black screen and the game itself kept going back and forth between being pulled up (with just black screen) and being minimized. It's being pretty weird.

Go into the properties for both the setup program and the main game executable, and set them to run with Compatibility mode Windows 7, and Run As Administrator ticked. Those things seem to help when I have issues after using programs to mod the game.

In Setup, you should select Windowed Mode. The ''distorted colour and split screen copy'' happens to the game (and aow2) when it's minimised or alt-tabbed from - but if it's in Windowed Mode this error doesn't happen. There's not much downside to Windowed mode as you can freely grab the sides of the window and expand it to whatever size you like, or just press the maximise button at the top right, and the game will instantly adjust with no problems.

Install the patch made recently by a fan found here https://github.com/int19h/aow-patch/releases - specifically the AoW_MapViewer.ShowScene_patch.zip file, which needs to be unzipped and then installed over your AoW1 directory.

That should probably fix it. However, I've never run into ''If I try to interact with the options, direct X "installs" something that doesn't help and I have to shut down my computer to get out of it.'' so I can't help with that.

Thanks very much! Once I reset the compatibility and ran it in compatibility mode, it worked great!
