found the matches tried to put the hibernation pod on fire.
did not work!
no cigerattes so far.

***SPOILER***
The cigarettes are to be found at the top end of the hibernation pod after opening it. It's a rather small hot spot to click to change the perspective (there are more like this in the game btw). Pick one out of the box, light it and use it with the smoke detector.

Mini-SPOILER regarding the walkthrough Hastur- recommended above: It's missing one task.
Very late in the game you'll find a flashlight, but to use it you'll have to find the batteries in another room first. The rest of this puzzle is fiddling with the flashlight and finding a dark spot ;-)
