I'm plowing through this game now (got to the final boss), and I'm wondering what weapons everyone out there is using. I find that the Hunter's default weapon seems to work best for me. A lot of the weapons (I'm looking at you, Bubble Gun) seem only useful in certain situations, but I'm wondering if there's another all-around workhorse that people out there are using.

I think it was around level 40 that I found him, in the same way I found the major -- just went into one of those doors, and instead of an empty cage, there he was. He comes with a powered up hunters rifle (with big, bouncing bullets) and 7 hearts. He definitely packs more of a punch than the Major, at least at default levels.

Okay, finished the game thanks to the Dragon and the bubble gun. I was afraid it would be completely useless against the final boss but it felt more effective for me than the first time I fought him with a fully upgraded rifle. Personally, I like the machine gun most, but it simply has so little stopping power that it feels impractical. The bubble gun is great as it virtually allows you to instantly kill any enemy in the game, even ghosts.

With it I managed to rush from around level 20 to 60 something before dying

So far haven't found a machine gun, I like the shotgun once it has a couple of range and damage upgrades better than the hunters rifle or crossbow though.
