I got the demo for this game on some random collection of demos years ago. I had never heard anything about it but was blown away. I loved it so much I bought the full version as soon as it hit the shelves. Unfortunately it got lost in the market.
There was nothing else quite like this when it came out. The completely open evironments were a new thing for offroad racing. If fact one of the modes allows you to just roam free in the enviroments and explore, just like real offroading. There are hidden pathways and canyons that can be discovered.
The single player mode ran a little thin after a while, but multiplayer is spectacular. The demolition mode was a favorite since you get more points for harder hits (and a bonus for the humiliating "ROLLOVER"). Multiplayer demolition with 3-4 or more players was an absolute blast and among the most fun I've had on my PC. Nothing like T-boning your buddy off a huge cliff and racking up the points!
The system requirements are so low that it runs fine on office computers making for a great lunchtime diversion. This game deserved better when it came out.

I bought this one based on this advice, and I'm glad I did! The game is a blast, and I can't wait to play it with friends.

I used to have this game when it first came out, lost the disc years ago. Does the GOG version support internet and lan multiplayer?

As far as multiplayer support... The game certainly supports LAN with up to either 6 or 8 players (can't remember exactly). The original internet support was through Codemasters servers which have long since shut down. It does have an option to connect to a server through direct IP address, so you should be able to host just fine.
Believe it or not I still have my original install of this game on my hard drive. If enough people get interested I would love to fire it up again for a little multiplayer.

Get a hamachi or other software for creating virtual LANs, encourage more ppl to dl this game and you'll have a lot of fun. when i come back from business trip next week ill join you for sure :)

I had this game on original CD. The Singleplaymode is a little bit crapy i think, but multiplayer is funny.

Not strictly true. There was an old freeware DOS game called Terep ("Terrain" in Hungarian), that spawned a later sequel predictably called Terep 2. One of it's most notable features was that your car would break in pretty impressive ways (well, impressive for the time, anyway) It was easily moddable as well, since most everything was stored in standard image files - textures, heightmaps, whatever. As such, it became fairly popular, with lots of fanmade levels, cars, launcher apps. It's damage model impressed the guys at a Invictus so much they hired its creator to work on a proper commercial project - and that is how 1nsane was born.
If you don't care for the history lesson, here's the short version: if you liked 1nsane, check out the original Terep 2. Just typing that into Google should work well enough, but can be a good starting point, it's partially in English. You won't find TerSel there, though (it's a neat launcher for the game), go [url=http://www.swgy.hu/suniland/weboldalak/jatek/terep2/]here for that. Finally, you might need to install VDMSound to get the sound to work. You could use DOSbox as well, if that's fast enough, I suppose.

Good find. Since Terep never made it to the US, I guess I should say there was nothing like it available here! Regardless, 1nsane brought the gameplay to the masses and is worthy of being here on GOG.

This does sound severely interesting, but I'm afraid that I might not like it.
Now I used to hate driving games before playing burnout paradise, and the open environment makes me think of burnout paradise, but somehow I know I'm dead wrong.
The level creator sounds pretty awesome though, what does this game play/feel like?

Although it is an open environment, it is not terribly interactive. After all, this is an off-road game rather than a city racer. The only other vehicles are the competitors. There are some random animals such as buffalo in the USA settings. The animals are more of a nusance, however. The fun from the environments in this game is that it is pretty much all accessible. That towering mountain may look rough, but there is almost always a way to the top of it.
The level creator is neat, but you don't have as much control as I would like. Pretty much you input the type of level you want (desert, tropical, hilly, islands, etc) and then it randomly generates a level from your criteria. Because it is random, you never get the same one over, although if I remember right you can save them.
The gameplay is focused around racing for the most part. There are multiple modes:
1. Racing: Basic racing over a course. However, the 'course' is pretty loosely defined by gates at regular intervals. You have to go through the gates in order.
2. Jamboree: There are 6 or so gates placed around the landscape. When you start one is active and you have to be the first through it. When someone passes through the first gate they get a point and the second gate becomes active. Now everyone must scramble to be the first through the second gate. You play until someone has a set number of points. The gates are widely spaced and you can use any path to get to them.
3. Capture the Flag: A flag is placed on the field and there is a score circle. The first person to the flag picks it up and carrys it. If they are hit by another vehicle the flag is stolen. The idea is to return the flag to the score circle without loosing it.
4. Demolition: A score circle is place on the landscape. You gradually acquire points by sitting in the circle. However, you also acquire points by ramming other players so you don't want to set still in that circle. The biggest points come from hitting another vehicle so that it flips over (ROLLOVER!).
I think there is at least one more mode, but hopefully you get the idea. Since it is an offroad game, you can not go full speed over most of the landscape or you will end up on your top. Care is sometimes called for in tricky areas.

I had this game once (and lost it many many moons ago), and i can tell you it's great. While it's graphics aren't anything to write home about nowadays, the open maps and clever race modes set it apart from anything that calls itself "offroad racer" today.
I especially enjoyed the off-road feeling, that let's the player choose whatever way he likes to go (the rough, hard and short route up the mountain? or the easier longer route around?), and the great (for it's time) damage mode.
edit: the missing mode that Despy mentioned litters a number of gates (i think up to 20) on the map, and you have to drive through all of them in any order you like. You have to be the first to collect them all obviously.
