Okage: Shadow King

Okage: Shadow King (2001)

by Zener Works Inc., Sony Computer Entertainment
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Adventure
Themes:Action, Comedy, Horror
Game modes:Single player
Story:Conquer your demons and you may conquer the world in this distinctly styled role-playing adventure for the PlayStation 2. Some have compared the look of this game to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas and the fluid, stop-motion appearance of the three-dimensional characters is not completely unlike that seen in seasonal television specials. OKAGE: Shadow King is not a holiday story, however, but a dark tale of polar opposites that questions basic notions of identity and essence. Players take the role of Ari, a young man with a remarkable affliction. A powerful demon -- calling himself "Stan" -- has taken refuge in Ari's shadow and is becoming infused in the boy's life. To free both his demon and himself, Ari embarks on a dangerous and involved quest to rid the world of seven other rival demons. Though he suffers under the burden of playing host to Stan, Ari is also aided from time to time by his demon's powers and the two begin to forge a symbiotic relationship.Show more

I absolutely love this game. I played this game a few years ago on my ps2 and had a really fun time with it, the characters are written well and have really cool goofy designs, and I really love the tim burton vibe this game has and I personally think this game should be available to more people to enjoy this masterpiece

This was such a charming game and one of my childhood favorites. It is funny, it is cute, it is absolutely nutty and every character has its own charm. A very unique coming of age story turned to save the world adventure with tons of laughs and heartwarming moments.

This was the first ps2 game I bought with my own money. I hand drew a map for the world library as a kid. Boogie Knight, if you're out there, thanks for all the forum help with OSK in the early 2000s.
This game oddly enough wasnt my first choice of games that came with ps2 demo cd. But its main character’s English name, Ari, was the same as my dad’s nickname, so it caught my attention and we got the game. Now coming up 24 years later, I’m making my own fan sequel as a love letter to this series. Sekimoto’s unique artwork and the love letter style parody to RPGs story line is something I wish people to see more. I do agree the gameplay can be janky, defiantly a product of its time, but the art, characters and story makes up for it.
Child me got this............Honestly, I forgot who got this for me (Or if I got it with Birthday/Christmas money.) 'Shrug'. Anyway, this is a bizarre game where the Evil King who wants to take over the world......possesses you're shadow. Everyone around you just shrugs and goes "Guess you're the Evil King's Minion now.". You don't get to do much about it beyond empty objections. If you haven't figured it out yet this game doesn't take itself too seriously, in fact is actually made me laugh and grin quite often through the years. It is a JRPG with a unique (Mostly, in all honesty it looks Like Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. I think someone on the game's development team might have also been on said Movie's Team.) art style and world, and man the Art Style has aged MARVELOUSLY (Realism never ages well.). So you're goal is to Help the Evil King obtain his lost powers and take over the world. Hilarity ensues and much snarkiness is had. As a JRPG it has Character Elements (Main Character is Neutral, neither weak nor strong against the other 3.) but if he dies it's game over (Which if you're a game dev and reading this DON'T EVER DO THAT.) and you're party members.......well you know the drill, attack enemies til they fall down and use magic to heal or damage. Other than Style, Writing, and Story it doesn't do alot different gameplay wise from most JRPGs, but it's competent enough where it counts. There are few games that have left as big an impact on me as this (Although there ARE some, Such as Star Ocean 2 and Suikoden 2.), and quite frankly if you ever play it it likely will leave an impact on you as well. We need more games like this, bursting with such creativity.
I actually played this game relatively recently about 2 years ago I love this game with all my heart, the vibe, tone and characters of the world. I hope more people get a chance to discover this
Those games also need your vote!

Freelancer
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.

Black & White 2
Black & White 2In the game, the player takes the role of a god called from the void (nothingness) to help those who invoked them. However, the player is not an omnipotent style god, but rather a god who rises and falls with his believers and the player must help develop their nature according to their good or evil desires. The player also has a creature, their physical representation in the world, which takes the form of an anthropomorphic ape, lion, wolf, turtle, cow, or tiger. Its physical manifestation can grow to an immense size, and adopt a good or evil persona separate of the player's. They develop their character as the player rewards or punishes their actions. In addition to the god simulation and city-building elements introduced in the original Black & White, Black & White 2 also features elements of real-time strategy gameplay, with the addition of controllable warfare and fighting units.
