Nerf Arena Blast

Nerf Arena Blast (1999)

by Visionary Media, Hasbro Interactive
Genres:Shooter
Themes:Action
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:Nerf Arena Blast is a first person shooter that uses the Unreal Engine, featuring a sports arena in which players use guns either from or inspired by Hasbro's line of foam-projectile-launching Ner guns. Like other Unreal-based games, it is oriented around competitive arena-based play, via teamplay, old-style deathmatch, and other match types, and can be played either multiplayer or single-player with bots. Single-player play features tournament modes with progression and scores. It can be played in matches of up to 16 players via LAN or Internet. The game was acclaimed for its excellent execution, capturing the enjoyment of the game on which it is based, but mildly criticized for the fact that those opposed to violence in video games would not be satisfied by "nerfing" the violence, so to speak, while it would also lose some appeal to those who are turned off by the lack of explicit violence and its more child-friendly approach. As of 2024, there is still a community of players who continue to play the game.Show more

Ah, NERF: Arena Blast. Developed at the same time as Unreal Tournament using a modifed version of the first Unreal engine and releasing almost a month before Unreal Tournament '99, Nerf Arena Blast can be classified as UT99 but aimed at a younger audience and it was marketed as such. No blood, no gore, just a family friendly version of Unreal Tournament and honestly, it actually came out pretty good. I first played it long ago on a PC Gamer demo disk, and being built on the Unreal engine, it ran flawlessly, transporting me into colourful arenas filled with targets, bells and buzzers, to challenge various brightly clad opponents, in a race to get the most points before the time runs out. The demo contained PointBlast, (a deathmatch style mode where you try to get the most points before you opponents, but this can be done by shooting them OR the various targets scattered throughout the arena) and BallBlast, a gamemode where you try to gather seven numbered balls and shoot them into a goal somewhere in the arena before your opponents can do the same, where it often becomes necessary to shoot you opponents to steal what they are carrying. Tracking down a full version and revisiting it back in 2023, it still ran very well and was an enjoyable time, but now it has all the extras produced by the community over the years that can be thrown into the mix. Thanks to the Unreal engine under the hood, the game was very moddable, with the community producing numerous maps and mods over the years, just like UT99. For something that was aimed at a younger audience, it could easily have been neutered and ruined like so many kid-friendly games that litter gaming's past, but no, it holds up surprisingly well, running smooth and is essentially a lighter, brighter and cheerier version of Unreal Tournament. That's why i feel it could do with being on GOG for others to experience this unique take on the Unreal Tournament formula.
Had a huge amount of fun with this game, I got this for my first "personal" PC that was way out of date even when I got it, a Pentium 2 (The weird card style that was around briefly) and I want to say 384mb RAM (I know the sticks were mismatched. Could be 192mb) and an ATI Rage Pro of some kind. Windows 98, of course. It was basically unreal tournament, but the modes were fun, including a single player mode, and the weapons were great too, remember a disc shooter that was like a homing rocket with alt-fire. I'd love to see this one on GOG because it's fun, anyone should be able to play it with any computer and I'd love another run since I have no idea where my copy went.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake EaterMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the follow up to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It is the first prequel in the series, taking the series to the year 1964. The player takes the role as the series' original antagonist, Big Boss, then known as Naked Snake. MGS3 is the first game in the series to take place in a jungle. This unique setting created an opportunity for new mechanics. The player can adapt to the environment by swapping Snake's camouflage, hunt animals and gather plants for food. This iteration in the series introduced a new feature in which the player must apply medicine and perform medical procedures on Snake if he is damaged in combat. Apart from the survival themed features, the controls and gameplay of the game are very similar to Metal Gear Solid 2. Like other Metal Gear games, the focus is on stealth, but the player can go through the entire game like a shooter if they choose to. Throughout the game Snake acquires weapons of all types; non-lethal firearms, handguns, sniper rifles, machine guns, shotguns, sub-machine guns, and explosives. Metal Gear Solid 3 was the first game to implement the CQC (close quarters combat) system. CQC allowed Snake to beat enemies down to knock them out, or put them in a chokehold to knock them out, kill them, or and/or question them. Metal Gear Solid 3's health system required the player to occasionally pause the game and treat Snake's ailments. When Snake is shot, there is a chance that the bullet didn't pass through him, requiring the player to use a knife to remove the bullet, apply disinfectant, apply styptic and bandage the wound. This was done through a submenu in the pause screen. Other ailments the player must treat Snake for include: leeches, broken bones, burns, cut, arrow/bolts/needles, stomach sickness, colds, and food/venom poisoning. Adding to the survival elements of the game, Snake Eater lives up to its name by requiring the player to scavenge food for Snake. Under the life bar there is stamina bar. If Snake does not eat any food the bar depletes, causing various effects. When the stamina bar is low, the player's ability to aim is severely handicapped, Snake's hands will shake in the first person aiming mode. Just like real life, Snake's stomach can also rumble, enemy soldiers can hear this, and will be alerted to Snake's presence.
