I downloaded the free version of Grid Cartographer and was so impressed that I got the premium version about 10 minutes later, haha. Thank you for creating this program, it's really awesome :)

So I snagged the pro version, is it advisable to run the tutorial? (is there a tutorial?)

There isn't a tutorial as such, but I've included lots of helpful information (especially about the various keyboard shortcuts and modifiers) in the Status Bar at the bottom of the window. Hopefully it's all fairly intuitive after a bit of playing around and experimentation with the menus.

I think the least clear part is probably that you can hold <space> to open the brush menu and also hold middle/right mouse over the toolbar to scroll it. I'll have a think about how to further improve that.

Other than that - always remember that fundamentally this is just a (basic) art package, so draw whatever looks right to you :-)

I'll have to give it a try to see how it compares to my standby of inkscape.

What are the dependencies? What would it take to port it to OS X? Is the file format fullly documented? (I tend to decide to finish a game 8 years later and pick up my maps where they were).

Dependencies for the Linux version are GTK3 and libpng12.

The internal .GCT file format isn't documented but you can export to a fully documented binary or XML format in the Pro edition (the intention was for that to be used for game development). I like to think that GC will still be around in 8 years though :-)

I have no plans to make an OS X version at this time, but it would be nice to do so one day.
