In regards to the lava walking boots I can obtain from the tailor ghoul, I have the means to get the dragon scales, however I've dropped the threads into water without knowing it's importance, is there any way to get those threads back or another way to walk on lava?
Any instance of the string is fine for making the boots. There are three on the 1st level; go north past the Grey Goblin base, open the door to the spider area, and make your way to the back across a short wooden bridge/plank (there's a Wolf Spider back there). There are other instances of string in different areas of the game as well, but that's the one I know off-hand.

That said, fire immunity (and thus the boots) are not required to beat the game if you know it well. It can become quite difficult and force you to take back alleys on Level 7, but it is possible.

Alternate means of dealing with Lava are to just run (if it is a very short distance), use the Flight spell (Vas Hur Por), use the Ring of Levitation (found on level 6, I think?) (this one is pretty awful for lateral movement), or use the Flameproof spell (Flam Sanct, iirc) to walk on lava without taking damage. Flameproof is also great for dealing with Fire Elementals.

I see, I braved on after that post into level 6 and started leveling mana and casting on a shrine so I could use the spells, level 7 is pretty hard, but I'm managing.

Unfortunately I threw all of the threads away, so I assume there's nothing else to rely on. Thank you for the reply.

Don't lose the scales. Keep an eye out, maybe you'll get lucky and find some more thread. I don't know how thoroughly you explored the upper levels, so maybe that's an option to try and find more?

In the meantime, Flameproof is probably your best option for dealing with lava. Just keep an eye on it so you can retreat to recast as needed.

Out of curiosity, did you basically throw anything you didn't want to keep into water or lava?

I was a bit dumb and didn't think of throwing items on the floor so I could come back later, but I was out of inventory space and just threw away what I thought was useless for some space. Everything is going fine however, flameproof is carrying me and all that's left before I insert the tripartite key is to find Garamon's bones and deliver them to his grave. If I ever do another run I will remember this next time.

There is one Foe that you are forced to fight on Lv. 7 of the game that has 2 strong threads that you can use to make the boots later. I restored an old savegame and captured a screenshot here as proof. Those boots will be quite useful on lv. 8.

Yeah, try not to throw items into lava or water. Better to just save bags and deposit your extra inventory into those bags and stash them into makeshift storerooms. I used to create a "storage area" on each floor and mark it on my map, so I could come back and grab items later on. Inventory management can be quite important in Ultima games.

That's a really good idea, I'll start doing it now that I'm starting fresh on 2, I was able to beat 1 with the flameproof spell.

Congrats!

I like 2 well enough, and it does some very interesting things, but 1 holds a special place in my heart. Probably because I grew up with it.

I got up to the city in the ice cave, but I'm really stumped on what to do now, however it's been a pretty good experience so far and I like the improvements to the game compared to the first.

Wow, you're blazing through these games!!!

Yeah, the ice cave has some really confusing bits and hidden pieces. Definitely took me a while to unlock certain sections and to get through certain puzzles. Check your map often and pay attention to what is written in notes, and said in conversation. You may want to physically take notes to make sure you keep track of certain terms used, like the names of cities or important plants or minerals. It's information that you can easily forget about in later worlds.

Have fun! I ended up creating little "storage pockets" near the entrance of each world, which was kind of nice. I designated each world to hold certain things, like one one world for weapons, one world for gold, one world for potions...later on, when I had enough bags, I could organize items in bags (the ice world has one area with a bunch of backpacks that are useful for organizing).

Enjoy, and good luck!

Yeah, I'm really enjoying these games, I've gone on a rabbit hole on immersive sims and these were the only ones I had left, and seeing as I enjoyed playing the first system shock, I thought this would be perfect.

I was actually thinking of doing on the entrances too, but splitting each into a type of item is sounds even better.
Just felt like I should let everyone know that I've just finished Ultima Undeworld II, and it was a truly unique experience, one that I won't forget. Both I and II were very enjoyable games.

Congrats!

Maybe I should play through UU2 again. It was indeed fun.
In UU1, due to an item limit bug on maps, it's still a good idea to throw excess items you are sure you won't need into the water/lava as it completely destroys them and removes them from your savegame.
The bug is known to erase important items if you're not careful by creating too many objects on the map.
These objects can be anything and include monster blood stains, which cannot be picked up and only be destoyed by the fireball spell.

Items that are safe to throw in the water/lava:
- any arrow, bolt, rock, or missile weapon. Missile weapons are 100% useless in both UU games.
- any excess food, as long as you have a fishing rod, you can get unlimited fish.(there's a create food spell as well)
- any "badly worn" items. Shak will fix "worn" - but will refuse to fix anything "badly worn".
