Bookwyrm627: Any instance of the string is fine for making the boots. There are three on the 1st level; go north past the Grey Goblin base, open the door to the spider area, and make your way to the back across a short wooden bridge/plank (there's a Wolf Spider back there). There are other instances of string in different areas of the game as well, but that's the one I know off-hand.

That said, fire immunity (and thus the boots) are not required to beat the game if you know it well. It can become quite difficult and force you to take back alleys on Level 7, but it is possible.

Alternate means of dealing with Lava are to just run (if it is a very short distance), use the Flight spell (Vas Hur Por), use the Ring of Levitation (found on level 6, I think?) (this one is pretty awful for lateral movement), or use the Flameproof spell (Flam Sanct, iirc) to walk on lava without taking damage. Flameproof is also great for dealing with Fire Elementals.

kavitormorsch: I see, I braved on after that post into level 6 and started leveling mana and casting on a shrine so I could use the spells, level 7 is pretty hard, but I'm managing.

Bookwyrm627: Don't lose the scales. Keep an eye out, maybe you'll get lucky and find some more thread. I don't know how thoroughly you explored the upper levels, so maybe that's an option to try and find more?

In the meantime, Flameproof is probably your best option for dealing with lava. Just keep an eye on it so you can retreat to recast as needed.

Out of curiosity, did you basically throw anything you didn't want to keep into water or lava?

kavitormorsch: I was a bit dumb and didn't think of throwing items on the floor so I could come back later, but I was out of inventory space and just threw away what I thought was useless for some space. Everything is going fine however, flameproof is carrying me and all that's left before I insert the tripartite key is to find Garamon's bones and deliver them to his grave. If I ever do another run I will remember this next time.

bliznik: There is one Foe that you are forced to fight on Lv. 7 of the game that has 2 strong threads that you can use to make the boots later. I restored an old savegame and captured a screenshot here as proof. Those boots will be quite useful on lv. 8.

Yeah, try not to throw items into lava or water. Better to just save bags and deposit your extra inventory into those bags and stash them into makeshift storerooms. I used to create a "storage area" on each floor and mark it on my map, so I could come back and grab items later on. Inventory management can be quite important in Ultima games.

I like 2 well enough, and it does some very interesting things, but 1 holds a special place in my heart. Probably because I grew up with it.

kavitormorsch: I got up to the city in the ice cave, but I'm really stumped on what to do now, however it's been a pretty good experience so far and I like the improvements to the game compared to the first.

kavitormorsch: That's a really good idea, I'll start doing it now that I'm starting fresh on 2, I was able to beat 1 with the flameproof spell.

Yeah, the ice cave has some really confusing bits and hidden pieces. Definitely took me a while to unlock certain sections and to get through certain puzzles. Check your map often and pay attention to what is written in notes, and said in conversation. You may want to physically take notes to make sure you keep track of certain terms used, like the names of cities or important plants or minerals. It's information that you can easily forget about in later worlds.bliznik: Have fun! I ended up creating little "storage pockets" near the entrance of each world, which was kind of nice. I designated each world to hold certain things, like one one world for weapons, one world for gold, one world for potions...later on, when I had enough bags, I could organize items in bags (the ice world has one area with a bunch of backpacks that are useful for organizing).
