I suppose my post in the TFix thread is a little off-topic there. So I thought I would start a new topic.

I just got the game and applied the TFix. Having never played Thief before, I'm not sure how much it improves the original game, but I'm sure the authors of the package did a great job. I did try it before and after the mod, and the graphics differences (so far) are subtle, which leads me to..

Unfortunately I'm having trouble appreciating the mod as it is not HD. Seemingly the character models are mostly untouched, too. I'm just too spoiled by modern graphical splendor! Really everything about the game seems antiquated. Doesn't mean it's not a great game, it's just, well, it's tempting to just go play The Witcher Enhanced maxed-out instead (another game I haven't played yet, but got on GOG.) XD

Anyone have any ideas on how I can look past the aged graphics and get into the game? Some people think it's easily among the best PC games ever made. I need some reassurance that it really is the masterpiece it's supposed to be. Lol.

Thanks
that is pretty much correct. if you like stealth games, you should give it a try - most people would agree that Thief is a good game.
To be blunt, I have little sympathy with you if you can't get into Thief because of the graphics. If that's the case then you are indeed, as you said, spoiled.

Rather than good versus bad, or old versus new, think of it as one style versus another.

Also, wait 15-20 years and see how The Witcher holds up. I have no doubt you'll see people posting about how they can't bear to play it because it's ugly.
Thanks folks, I'll give it a try.
I played the Thief games for the first time last year, and never once did I think that the dated graphics detracted from my enjoyment of playing the game. I was instantly captured by the ambiance and the gameplay, and the games have become one of my all-time favourites.

I suggest you actually concentrate on playing the game instead of waiting to be amazed by the graphical representation of the environment. The level design is superb, and between trying to find your way around, completing the objectives ( I played on Hard for the first time, making me concentrate more) and the thrill of sneaking past/running from guards - and in the case of Thief Gold, also the undead - you'll quickly forget about the "shortcomings" of the game's engine.

If you really cannot get into the first two because of the graphics, I suppose you could try the 3rd game, which came out in 2004, and therefore has less dated visuals, but the first two are definitely a lot better and memorable when it comes to gameplay and level design.
Thanks. What's the deal with EAX sound in the options menu, how do I enable it? Or, should I?
If you can activate it do, it gives you audio that is influenced more by the environment.
If you want to try T1-style gameplay with modern graphics, you could try The Dark Mod.

Is there anything I need to tweak, or download, etc, in order to activate EAX?

Right now the game will not let me.
It is an hardware thing, assuming you have the correct drivers if you cannot enable it... you wont.
In other words, I have to figure it out on my own :-)

No free passes for the dense, eh?
This game is the grandfather of stealth games in PC. Also, its qualities are legendary, in visuals (essentially for its era, of course), its sound system which is unique, complicated, and as of yet unparalleled, the atmosphere and feel, the approach and gameplay... What is there not praised already? This is one of a kind, a first person looter! Also, rich characters, nice cutscenes, dark atmosphere, nice gadgets, secret loot, hidden objectives or extra ones in expert difficulty... And i could talk all day, but it would tire and is pointless.

Even the writer and designer of Half Life said he adores the original thief. Listen to the man.

Quote: "Marc Laidlaw, writer and designer on Half-Life, said that "Thief is the single most terrifying, immersive, and rewarding game I have played and the one single-player game I continue to replay. [...] There are countless books I wish I had written; Thief is one of the few games I wish I had worked on."

There are games I keep installed to play over and over again. Thief and Thief 2 are among those, and sometimes Thief 3... Followed by Assassin's Creed series.

Thief games I play over and over again to take it all in, I love the atmosphere, and mostly non linearity of the levels. There is something relaxing about going around knocking out guards, and hiding their bodies! Assassins' Creed games I just go back mainly to run around the beautiful cities and kill guards for the fun of it.

I like earlier Splinter Cell gamers as well for using the same stealth mechanic as Thief series. But its not a series I play over and over again. It simply doesn't have the same quality of story telling, or elaborate missions.

I liked Dark Messiah for essentially have a Thief mode. But as its very linear, its not one I would go back to over and over again, except to maybe try out the other classes.

Yes I have read the Wikipedia entry and many user reviews of Thief, figuring that I probably missed out on something in a big way.

About 3 levels in, I have to say I'm starting to see what the fuss is all about. For me the atmosphere really stands out, the ambient music/sound is a big part of this, but the rustic/old-school visuals also contribute nicely.

I have to say I'm not a very patient gamer though and prefer to run whenever I can and therefore get caught a lot, and so I reload frequently. I would say this is my only real problem right now, but everything else is shaping up great.

I have played stealth games before, my first one was probably Hitman: Blood Money and I really enjoyed it at the time, I mean the game was over the top and full of clantily clad women, but I don't count that against it. :P To this day I still think H:BM is a good game. But Thief got there first.
you should take a tour to the past with Hitman as well - all the games from the series have some uniqueness in them. I especially enjoy the roughness and unpolishness of the first game.
